maybe its not for either W7 or W8?

When 2 things meet each other, Quantum stuff happens.

why would they list Windows 7 in the download list then? : http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/psi/swdHome/?lang=en&cc=au&sp4ts.oid=3459245

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate is that the reason as it lists every version of Win7 apart from ultimate...?

Did you download the wrong version? The 32-64bit, they're not interchangeable. For win 7 ultimate, maybe just go with win 7 professional X-bit (make sure you download the correct bit version)

Ok, we can scratch that possibility then. Do you actually get any sound (when playing song, for example)?

Try booting to safe mode, go to control panel>device manager>sound, video and game controller. Uninstall everything inside that category. Reboot normal, it should start searching for audio drivers. After it's done, try running the file again. If still not working, best bet is to contact HP support. Might be hardware defect or something.
