aren't sound cards/high end on board becoming more and more pointless?

SAV1OUR

im wondering what the general opinion is on this but. with digital music driving down the quality of music rather then something like i cd wouldn't that make high end sound cards a waste of money to get nothing? (high end on board rog etc)

I think Soundcards are useful if you need multiple inputs and outputs, but for general use/gaming its best to stick with onboard.

On the fence....

My laptop has build in sound blaster 3d so I was used to how this sounded - this was my main PC for the last 2 years

My (old) desktop that I sold a few weeks back sounded TERRIBLE through the same speakers and I was just using the on board audio on the cheapo asus mobo installed

My latest PC with my MSI z87 g45 gaming motherboard has an apparently decent on board audio, and it DOES sound better than my old desktop does and on par with my laptop the sound quality is great, the soundstage feels bigger (crystallizer maybe?) it now sounds good

Read into that what you will

Desktop - Corsair 300r i7 4770k H100i MSI 780ti 16GB Vengeance Pro 2400mhz Crucial MX100 512gb Samsung Evo 250gb 2 TB WD Green, AOC Q2770PQU 1440p 27" monitor Laptop Clevo W110er - 11.6" 768p, i5 3230m, 650m GT 2gb, OCZ vertex 4 256gb,  4gb ram, Server: Fractal Define Mini, MSI Z78-G43, Intel G3220, 8GB Corsair Vengeance, 4x 3tb WD Reds in Raid 10, Phone Oppo Reno 10x 256gb , Camera Sony A7iii

Makes more sense if the drivers suck or the location of the integrated sound on the motherboard picks up interference.

Fuck Realtek. Fuck on-board sound. Drivers always break, cause BSODs, etc. My 30€ Xonar DG is miles better because it works.

any noticeable difference between the two of them other then stability?

Sound cards are a lot like ass, everybody loves playing with it but ultimately that's where the shit comes from.

Yes, I see them as pointless. They were great a few years ago when motherboards still had crappy on board audio. Nowadays they really aren't necessary unless you need the extra ports.

An internal sound card is still vulnerable to the potential interference problems that on board audio is.

For me it's either on board or an external USB AMP/DAC

Not to mention that most people have driver issues with soundcards. Which now that I think about it, means that you are paying for more driver issues.
