FrllNas / Deeenas - Dell computer rebuild as Freenas (name undecided)

jaytee1414

Hey guys, this is my first build log and I got a funny project. Hope to see some comments or improvements about what I'm doing.

This is not a million dollars build, but rather a cheap and everyone can do build, so please enjoy. I will be finishing this with in this week, stay tuned if you are interested.

Also, help me decide the name. I would like it to be a combination of Freenas and Dell :D

So a short introduction about the computer. This dell dimension 1100 is the computer that my mom got me when I'm in P3? it's a really cheap business computer type of thing and it have been heavily used or online games for the first 4 years of it's life. Since then, I put it aside because of it's lack of power (single core Celeron D, with 2GBs of ram... nice). Then about a year and a half ago, I used it as a school project and tried Freenas on it. It ran for around 12-13 months and it died... Well the network chip did.. I think. So now I decided to change out some parts and rebuild this machine, because my primary backup for my Macbook Pro (no hate please) is on this machine. To do this, I got some "cheap" parts and start my attempt to rebuild this machine.

Please enjoy, and beware of the ugly photoshop because I want to take out the ugly background in the photos... :D

8) That grey / silver? is too ugly, so I decided to paint it with... spray paint for plastic models...: (hope it works and its matte black)

That's it for the first post. I was nearly killed by the paint...

More post tomorrow, and the matte black is quite nice but only about 40% of the case is painted, so yeh.. not showing it just yet.

Please comment below, anything will be appreciated. Also stay tuned if you are interested :)

isn't it worth investing in some other case? That isn't an old dell? :P Or are you stowing it away where it won't be seen?

Would like to see the paint coat

It is my first time spray painting something so it's not perfect, but some in-progress shot
