Usable RAM

Hey ;)

First off, I have looked for this topic on the forums before, and even though I found some similar ones, I couldn't exactly find the right one, so I thought I would put one up with my own specs.

Right, so I bought a 4gb Corsair Vengeance, to go with some other sticks that I got in my mobo (Packard Bell ixtreme M5800).

In the end the configuration is that I have one 4gb Corsair Vengeance CL9 in a single channel, and two 2gb Samsung's sticks (they were in there since my pc was bought new) which are placed in dual channel.

Now, I started my PC and went into My Computer > Properties to check if the new 4gb ram is added. And yeah, it is. But, it looks like so: Installed Memory (RAM): 8.00 GB (3.18 GB usable)

Yes, I am running 64bit version of Windows 7. (checked multiple times just to be sure)

I tried going into BIOS and setting the Memory Remapping thing to enabled, but when I tried to boot my system up back again after that change, windows kept crashing out at the loading screen.

I went to msconfig.exe and checked for maximum memory, which was not checked, so that's not it...

I went to Resource Monitor (as suggested on microsoft's site) and it shows me that 4937MB are reserved by the hardware. Now that's cool and all, but what exactly would that go to? I mean I have a GT 630 graphics card (4GB DDR3 version, which I'm planning to update to gtx660 shortly), but I don't really see what else would be taking this amount of memory... Especially that the last thing upgraded in my rig is that one 4gb stick, and before that there was only 4gb available in the first place, which makes me wonder how on earth would the 'hardware' suddenly need so much memory, but was fine earlier on with half the current value...

Any suggestions? Thanks for help :)

If you have a 32-bit OS you cant use more than 4gb of ram, or the ram you installed could be dead/not working

he has 64 as he said, the issue i think is just the fact that its different sticks of probably different speeds.

Thanks for a quick response, but I said about that already ;/

I think that could be the case if I'm honest. The Vengeance 4gb is said to be clocking at 1600Mhz, but in cpu-z it's marked as 667mhz for maximum bandwith. Although I don't quite understand why that is, since they're not in corresponding channels... (I'm a newbie in upgrading a pc :P )

Not true there are plenty of 32 bit PAE OS's out there (even some windows ones) which can support up to 64 GB RAM.

I will take the two other ones out and then see how is the Corsair running on it's own. If it's going to show me 4gb out of 4gb available, I will most likely buy another single 4gb stick of the same make, and put it in dual channel (unless someone tells me that it's a bad idea :F )

Also, just so that I don't have to make a new topic (save the planet [server]), I have another question...

Do you think that running this system is a good idea, or something I should probably spend more time planning on?

Mobo: ixtreme M5800

CPU: Intel i5 650 @ 3.20GHz

And to that, I want to add a EVGA GeForce GTX 660 SuperClocked, along with EVGA's 500B 500Watt 80+ BRONZE PSU, and of course get up to 8GB RAM.

Is this going to be compatible in any way shape or form? I need to be getting at least 60fps on medium settings (without AA and posteffects) in games like ArmA III (mainly that one).

@edit

Yeah, I took the 2x2gb sticks, and I just got some rapid bluescreen at windows' startup, and it restarted the computer immediately, and then done the same thing again, and again and again, until i decided to put the other sticks back in...

@add

I ran a Razer GameBooster's analytics, and for Memory section I got what follows:

0404 - Free Pagefile            : 1.85 GB

0405 - Bank Label               : BANK0
0406 - Speed                    : 1333 MHz
0407 - Total Width              : 64 Bits
