TN 120htz vs IPS 60htz

Gauzl

I have always had a TN 1080p 120htz monitor and with the new G-sync monitors coming out soon I am considering upgrading to a IPS 1440p monitor but can't decide between having 120htz or only 60htz but better picture quality. Il have enough GPU power to get solid 60fps on any game but I have always been use to playing more then 60fps.
Please help me decide.

I have a LG 22" TN monitor at home and a DELL 24" IPS at work. The next monitor I buy for myself will be IPS it is just glorious. I suggest you look at a few IPS monitors in a shop or something.

Have you ever tried playing above 60fps?

Playing at 100+ fps on a 120hz monitor is eyegasm.

But damn IPS have beautifull colors, its a hard one.

It's like with most things, what are your priorities? IF you play a lot of fast paced games that could really benefit from being smoother, the 120Hz model is probably a good bet. If you don't, then IPS is a better choice.

Personally play on a 144Hz panel and I would not trade it for an IPS, but I can appreciate the better viewing angles and colours.

Would you say that above 60fps is over rated? Because graphics are very important for me either wise it wouldn't invest over $1000 just into graphics cards, but I still appreciate getting 90fps+

I don't think actual rated 1440p panels above 60hz exist. You should get one of the korean ones, that's what i did and mine is sitting at 80hz right now :)

I value color/picture quality over refresh rate myself, but if you are serious FPS player hz is usually the way to go. I will say that in some games that render players before they get over head tags, I have found better picture clarity and color of IPS has allowed me to spot them distances farther than on TN panel.

We can build it, we have the technology!

I'd go with the TN unless you're doing professional work requiring color accuracy.

I mainly play FPS like BF and like to try my best and keep up good stats but I also play simulator and RTS games and most don't have good SLI support so I rarely get over 60fps on them. My main goal is to play all crysis games on max settings at 1440p with a solid 60fps only then will I be satisfied with my pc's performance.

I'm going to cap my monitor's fps at 60 and play my favourite games and see how it feels, that should help me decide.

CS:GO is a perfect example of a game that benifits REALLY QUITE A LOT from 144Hz. It is so much smoother that it really helps me play better. It is not overrated at all, but it isn't as useful for all games equally.

The question you need to ask yourself is:

"Do I prefer better in game visuals, to enjoy the game art style. OR, Do I seek for the fastest response time, I don't care what, I want just want my game to run at 120fps or 144fps to enjoy the smoother graphics and response time".

Or to put it differently:

Do you see games as art? or just competitive playing?

Competitive players usually don't play games at high settings. They don't care about visuals. All they care is fast response time with guaranty no hiccups, to have everything in their side to win. If that is the case, a 120/144Hz is the way to go.

If you see games as art form, where you want to enjoy the best visuals, and really want to have the best visuals which will showcase the hard work by the artists behind the game, and help make the experience more immersive, then an IPS panel is what you want.

That is the question that only you can answer. No one here can answer it for you. We are not you.

However, we can share our opinions.

I get a powerful computer to enjoy gaming (as well as needing it the performance for my work). I like playing my games at high and up settings, even if it dips here and there in fps, I don't mind, I want to enjoy the game story, music, and visuals. It's like watching a good movie. Sure you can buy a 15inch Zenith mono CRT TV with washed out colors to watch a movie, or you can get a home entertainment system and really enjoy it.

I am no competitive player. But I do enjoy FPS games, but I also play other genres. When the graphics "pops", and appear detailed, and vivid without being over saturated, it's just an experience you really enjoy.

120hz. there's no going back to 60hz

But what if you bought an IPS and were amazed with the difference over TN, would you say the same about There be no going back?

I have a 120Hz next to a 60Hz, any random person would be able to tell a difference just by scrolling through this thread on either monitor. For me as well "There's no going back to 60Hz."

Two equal panels with the exception being TN vs. IPS, you'd have to throw up a cherry picked image and point out the color differences, and even after doing so some would still be like "..But which one is better?" I still can't tell personally, I just have to trust everyone else's results telling me it's better. Maybe I'm colorblind. IPS feels a lot like mechanical keyboards to me; once you've bought into the idea you want to spread it to others so you're not the only dork that overpaid for prettier colors you can't see.

IPS if you want a really nice looking picture, but the TN if you really want the high refresh rate.

I just tried playing it at 60fps and 120fps and the difference is daunting, I think il just stick with TN until IPS or better can go 120htz.
