Changing Coolant Colors

I will be changing from blue to black coolant and I know that you need to flush your radiators so I will do that, but do I need to clean my CPU block (I got a new GPU block) or clean the tubing/reservoir? The tubing has a slight blue tint, but since the new coolant is black do I still need to? Will just a flush be good enough?

If I do it's fine, it only takes like 20-30min since I know the runs. :)

Thanks.

As far as I'm aware colored coolant does build up in your water blocks no matter how good it is. So I'd say yes, clean them. It wouldn't hurt to replace your tubing either, since it's nearly always the tubing that goes first, causing blockages in loops.

That's what I thought :/

Do you know how to open an EK Supremacy block? Could I just use something like a pipe cleaner and scrub the inside of it without taking it apart?

Pretty sure it just comes apart with screws - from the underside I think, don't quote me on that though. YouTube it if you aren't sure but from the videos I've watched recently to prepare myself for my next WC build, taking it apart and using some ketchup/toothpaste and a toothbrush usually works very well. You don't even need to scrub it with Ketchup, as long as you leave it to sit for a few hours, it should all rinse off.

Any idea if I would have to take it off my motherboard or not? That's a hastle.

Yes! Absolutely yes. How long has your loop been running since it was last maintained?

Fully clean about 4 months. Drained yesterday.

Hmm, that's not actually very long without a clean. The norm with Colored Coolant seems to be approximately  a 6 month period between cleans. I think I'd open the blocks up just to be sure considering it's coloured coolant.

I've actually only had colored coolant for a week. The rest was DI.

I still will though, thanks.

Really, and your already switching?

Hm. I'd give it a full servicing anyway. :)

Hi bbq @TheNinjaNextDor

You may want to try black tubing doe? It may be easier, if the black gunks up anything you probably wont be able to tell. W/ clear tubing

Will do!

The only reason I used my EK stuff was that I lost my biocide lol I got Mayhems pastel black to go with my color scheme :D

Can you PM me some pictures when you do? I bet it looks awesome! I wanted to do a sort of "Black-out" themed WC build this summer and this could be just what I was looking for!

Black tubing doesn't look nearly the same. Pastel Coolant has a very attractive Matte finish. As long as the OP regularly cleans and replaces his coolant and tubing, say every 3-6 months, he should be fine!

I've nothing against the company, I just haven't seen any tubing manufacturer other than Primochill get tubing done properly.

True, I had some issues with primochill advanced LRT when I swapped coolants, but replacing the tubing fixed it nicely and haven't had issues since.

I always give companies a second chance on products, because sometimes it's user error rather than manufacturer.
