4770K temp 50-60 degree Celsius on idle. Random Chrome Crashes.

Go to solution Solved by mgsstar,

Yes I did tried reinstalling chrome but to no avail. Yes I already tried looking at it and now it shows that Nvbackend.exe is causing the high CPU loads. What do I have to do next? :/

Make sure your windows is up to date and Nvbackend.exe is

the main process for GeForce Experience after update. If you kill it, GeForce Experience may crash.

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/653391/geforce-experience/nvbackend-exe/post/4042367/#4042367

It might be updating in the background and somehow using your cpu. I would try blocking geforce experience from startup using msconfig to see if it is the cause.

Hi Guys,

Long time member here in the forum but I haven't been active as of late. Okay so here's the problem I just build my first system last month. I didn't have any problem with it till later this month. First Chrome randomly cashes on me when I'm not even doing anything on my computer. So I decided to check temperatures and I discovered that my 4770k has been running really hot at 50-60 degrees even on idle. YES IM USING THE STOCKED FAN THAT CAME WITH THE PROCESSOR (didn't have a budget for the after market cpu cooler at the time) but it was running okay it was running around 27-35 degrees before but now even on idle it's around 50-60. I just need some help with this since this is my first build :( I really want to solve this problem. Thank you guys.

Check with Event Viewer to see what caused the crash and is your stock heatsink free of dust as it can affect its cooling performance.

You'll probably have to re-seat the cpu cooler if it's doing that bad a job of keeping it cool.  Maybe keep an eye on the performance monitor to see if anything is taxing the cpu in the background.

I'm sorry for sounding like a noob here but where can I find even viewer on? Is it the one on the Win Task Manager?

Were temperatures normal when you first got the system?  What is the climate like where you live?

Already did that. I tested if the CPU Cooler wasn't seated properly but it stayed in place. Checked for dust and nothing. Now CPU isn't processing anything on the background. I don't know, some forums are telling that my RAM may be the one's causing this. Can this be true?

Ram may cause the chrome instability but it wouldn't account for high cpu temperatures.

Yeah, at first i was getting around 27-36 Degrees on the CPU when it first run. It did that for about a month then two weeks ago chrome started crashing. I thought that it was just chrome having a buggy update but after a while i noticed that it kept crashing so I checked what the temps are then discovered that my CPU was running around 40-60 degrees even on idle. Well I live in the middle-east but I always have my AC open so room temp should be around 20-25 degrees. In a very dry environment.

Okay, at first i was worried now I guess all I have to figure out is which RAM isn't stable on my system.

Definitely try dusting out your system.  Make sure everything is securely plugged in, nothing is loose.  If none of that works, try getting a Hyper 212 EVO, it is an inexpensive, but very very good CPU cooler.

Well if you can reproduce the crashing, either

A: Try it with only one stick of ram in at a time or

B: Run memtest if you cannot reproduce the crashing.

It could be something else entirely

This is actually my first choice for the cooler. Will look into that this weekend. Thanks!

Guys one more question. Can the 4770k stand that amount of heat?

Guys one more question. Can the 4770k stand that amount of heat?

When your CPU is under full load, like gaming or a stress test, it should not exceed 85C.  85C is the limit, and that limit is put in place for safe overclocking.  Your temperatures are high, but they are not at the limit.  If your CPU is at 50-60C while idle, that is very, very high.  But if you have a game open in the background, or many programs running, etc.. then 50-60C is not bad.  Once you hit 80C, start to get worried, 85C is the absolute limit, and anything above 85C, shut your computer down immediately, wait 10 minutes for it to cool down, then start it up again.

I have an i5-4670k.  When I would stress test(full load) at stock Ghz, and stock cooler, I would reach 82C.  So the stock cooler is a really bad option.  My CPU at idle was 32-35C.  When I bought my Hyper 212 EVO, idle temperatures immediately dropped to 28-32C and when I stress tested, at stock Ghz, my temperatures plummeted to 65C.  It is obvious that the stock cooler that Intel provides is a really bad, and loud option.  I highly recommend the Hyper 212 EVO.

BUT

Your problem might be more than just the stock CPU cooler.  50-60C on idle is very high.  Make sure that the fan on the stock cooler is spinning.  Make sure it is at least at 800rpm, preferably more.  I think the stock cooler goes all the way up to 2000rpm, but that will sound like a jet engine.  When I was using the stock cooler, I had mine set to a constant 1200rpm, it wasn't too loud and performed well enough.

You may want to try removing it, cleaning both sides (CPU and heatsink).

Then reapply thermal paste (very sparingly) and have another go. Make sure you have thermal paste on hand before starting this...

Okay so apparently something is pushing my processor. I just don't know which one. How to do I find out which program is making my CPU hot?

Are you using Windows 8? In Win 8's Taskmamager you can see exactly which program affects GPU, RAM and LAN.

New to Star Citizen? Look no further!

Did you try reinstalling Chrome? Resource Monitor is a good tool in seeing your loads. Follow my instruction above but instead of putting eventvwr put in

resmon.exe

Hi! No I'm using Win 7 Professional. And I already saw the culprit it's  NvBackend.exe I guess it's an Nvdia thing according to my research but I still can't find a solution anywhere.
