First Build: All Thoughts Welcome

Dear all,

I've finally got enough money to build a computer that I feel reaches my wanted standards: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/cjsun9/saved/4sbn.

It will be used mostly for gaming but is also intended just as an enthusiast build and so I'm hoping to get some great raw performance out of it.

I was just wondering if there were any improvements/trade-offs/additions/removals that would make the build better, even if it requires spending a bit more money, I'd rather do that if the performance is worth it.

Thanks so much,

cjsun9

PS: Any ideas about peripherals for gaming, specifically: monitor (24" or 27"?), keyboard and mouse?

Get an i5 if you only want it for gaming (and honestly, an i5 will do everything else just fine as well).

Your screen size is mostly personal preference. I always prefer buying those locally... a tv or monitor that looks great for a lot of people on the internet may look terrible to you. Go try some out personally... at least to make up your mind. You could always buy what you choose online then.

As for other accessories, I like Razer mice (The Deathadder is a pretty cheap but well-built gaming mouse), and I have a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 keyboard that I love.

Price breakdown by merchant: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/3wIj9/by_merchant/

Benchmarks: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/3wIj9/benchmarks/

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£161.99 @ Amazon UK) <-- Only need an i5 for gaming.

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler  (£25.45 @ Scan.co.uk) <-- Get this CPU cooler so you can overclock and make your computer more quiet.

Motherboard: MSI Z87-G55 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  (£90.92 @ Aria PC) <-- Get the least expensive Z87, SLI capable motherboard you can find.  Motherboard doesn't impact performance.

Memory: Patriot Viper 3 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  (£52.30 @ CCL Computers) <--You only need 8GB for gaming.  Get the least expensive 1600mhz, 9-9-9-24, 1.5v RAM you can find.  Brand doesn't matter.  Start with 8GB.

Storage: Crucial M500 240GB 2.5" Solid State Disk  (£82.74 @ Amazon UK)

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (£53.99 @ Aria PC)

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8 (OEM) (64-bit)  (£73.74 @ Ebuyer)

With your budget, anything less than a GTX780 is a failure to allocate resources properly.  i5 and GTX780 is a really powerful computer that will last you for a long time, as well as being upgrade-ready.
