future ddr4 memory prices

Hello guys

 

I'm saving up to buy a new rig and I'm interested in the upcoming x99 platform. The reason why is because I noticed the x79 chipset was really future proof and had a great lifespan before the lower end chip sets started catching up in features.

 

my goal for my next rig is to have higher-end future proof components like an m.2 ssd etc

 

another reason why i'm attracted to x99 is the ddr4 memory is because I want to have at least 16gb of memory without paying the current ddr3 premium

(10$/gb is insanely absurd for memory that will be outdated in 2-3 years) (I refuse to buy 8 more gb for my current rig lol)

 

so here's my question, do you guys think ddr4 will be priced cheaper than ddr3? I think it will

 

the reason I think it will be cheaper is because I remember ddr2 memory going up insanely in price towards the end of it's lifespan (I think time will repeat itself)

seriously, I remember seeing 4gb of ddr2 going for like 80$ when ddr3 came out

 

Even if there is an early adopter premium, I still don't think the price of ddr4 will as retarded as the current price of ddr3

 

what do you guys think?

It's going to be a while for the ddr4 memory to be adopted. So yea "future proofing". And the prices....well probably after quite some time maybe like the prices we have now, and ddr3 will be even cheaper maybe. Or more expensive since less people will be using it, and making something that people aren't really using might cost extra.

Hell, DDR4 may be priced at 1.5-2.5X DDR3 pricing. It's an emerging technology, like Oculus or phase change cooling.

and only being limited to newer generations with no chance for backwards compatibility

so yeah, new builds will pay for the over developed technology with limited performance

gains. DDR2 to DDR3 was voltage drops and speed increases. CAS stayed the same

or higher. we'll prolly see 2400MHz DDR4 on CL15 and 1.35v. woot-woot!

I personally think that DDR4 wont be that expensive so its unpayable. Seeing a DDR3 from 2008 6GBkit around 200 USD; which by then is a solid price. DDR4 for a 16 Gb kit can be around 200-300 USD, also simular price.

If anything, when DDR3 first came out, DDR2 was dropped in price loads! I remember that it was much cheaper than DDR memory (£20/1GB DDR and about £25/2GB DDR2) whilst DDR3 was close to the price it is now there's a shortage.

 

Then we had tons of DDR3 and it all went down to £30/8GB and £60/16GB - just missed out on buying some at that price as well!

 

If that's anything to go by, DDR3 will come down a little in price to a more acceptable level to make way for DDR4, and it'll stay that way until we have tons of DDR4 and tons of devices to support it.

the reason it comes to industry first is theyre the only people that have a real need for it, we get the run off.

ddr2 800 cl5=5/400*1000=12.5ns latency with 6400mb/s bandwidth (double for dual channel)
ddr3 1600 cl9=9/800*1000=11.25ns latency with 12,800mb/s bandwidth (double for dual channel)
ddr4 3200 cl18=18/1600*1000=11.25ns latency with 25,600mb/s bandwidth (double for dual channel)
if your into rendering and dying for bandwidth sure it might make sense (2011 is quad channel anyway but worse latency so its like natively running faster ram..)
ddr2 got cheaper untill ddr3 came out, ddr3 got cheaper till dd4 comes out and ddr4 will get cheaper untill whatever comes out next the downside is when they first come out theyre usually a bit more expensive or on par, im guessing ddr4 will be price equivilant to the equal speed ddr3, just look at ddr2 1066 vs ddr3 1066 when that switchover happened.

the decrease in voltage required to run DDR4 is likely something large companies would be interested in, but not at a premium price. most companies already went through an upgrade cycle recently as well, so its really hard to say what the prices will be. Enthusiasts and large tech-savvy companies looking to cut electricity bills may make up the bulk of DDR4 adopters for the next year or two, which may deflate prices quiet nicely in a couple years.
