Overclock questions

i have my i7-4770k clocked at 4.2GHZ at 1.225V, i want to push it further but the temperature is reaching 100......i have a h80i and i think i installed pretty firmly inside my case......

Would it be a bad thermal paste problem because i saw people push their CPU to 1.3v at 4.5GHZ and still didn't reach the Throttle point which is 100.

This is my first attempt to overclock i don't know if it is normal. PLZ help me

Motherboard: Asus Z87-k

RAM: Gskill 2x4G running at 2133

Graphics card:GTX780ti

Power supply: Seasoinc 650w

have you tried to lower the voltage and check if it's stable? It could reduce temps

That's a moderate oc at best and the voltage is well within safe limits. What are you using to stress test?

temps hitting 100C is Not good my friend! that is actually a "downclock" because your cpu will be throttling.

I dont think your cooler is mounted proper!

try and re seat the cooler

if you want to test whether its mounted proper or not.

turn off your overclock

mount the stock heatsink fan

stress test and record max temps

re mount the h80

stress test and record max temps

max temps on stock settings should be lower on your h80 if it is mounted proper and the pump is flowing.

100c is too high for the 4770k. You can't base your overclock on what other people achieve, because overclocking comes down to luck, as it's all about the quality of your Processor as it comes of the production line.

You have a few options:

-Use a higher quality thermal compound. The stock compound that comes with Corsair Rads is ok. But, if you want to get the absolute best temperatures, use a different compound.

-Get static pressure optimised fans for your radiator. These fans are specifically designed to pull heat from your radiator. Look into the Corsair SP120 series.

-Get a better cooler. Personally, I use a 4770k with a h100i, temps are at 80c with 1.35v at 4.4ghz.

-Delid your Processor. Intel use a terrible TIM, you can remove this if you feel competent enough (This voids your warranty of course).

-Replace your 4770k with a different one. The most expensive option, if you can exchange the Processor with your vendor, then all is good.

Corsairs H80/H100i's are known for having loose mounts, you should check and double check to see if in fact it's just a bad mount and if you have something lying around you could make a shim for the backplate to make the mount tighter.an H80i should be able to handle that CPU with that voltage easily.

i am trying to save up money for a custom loop, now i am pretty much stuck with this

something is wrong here

i done everything right(i think)

have you tried to lower the voltage and check if it's stable? It could reduce temps

i tried it stables at 1.195 but i gave it a little bit more for a more stability

That's a moderate oc at best and the voltage is well within safe limits. What are you using to stress test?

AID64 for the most time

i am sure the pump is working because i had this cooling about 3 months now.......I will try to mount it again tomorrow and see what we have got

I want to change a new compound but don't know what to choose, there are 5 different options in the store (Canada Computers)..... i do have the SP120 high performance edition on it , i picked it up with my cooler

For now i won't change my cooler and CPU, and i won't open it up(too dangerous for noobs like me), so any suggestions with the thermal compounds?

what are you using to make the CPU temps soar to 100°? p95? XTU?

fan speed is 100%? one fan? two fans?

I ran AID64 and another kind of tests for my CPU, it didn't reach 100 but it is almost there(98 most of the time).....

two Corsair SP120 high performance edition in push and pull at max rpm

arctic mx-4 or mx-2

aida64 is known to overvolt cpu if your cpu vcore mode is set to "adaptive" so does prime95 and occt.

what is your cpu voltage well stress testing?. it may be going beyond 1.225

preferred stress test for haswell is xtu since it does not overvolt the cpu.

It would but I would suggest finding a thin sheet of rubber or a set of ribber o-rings or washers as they will be reusable and they will maintain their mount pressure longer than cardboard will as cardboard will not retain any pressure against the backplate once it's squished in there. Technically that's not what you need but using something made of rubber would ensure that your mount doesn't lose it's pressure over time, it will also allow to to avoid constantly replacing the cardboard when it becomes too compressed.

Motherboards are pretty strong, when you're mounting coolers to them you want to make sure the fit is snug not tight. If you make it too tight you can squish the TIM out of the sides of the CPU block. Unfortunately this isn't something I can tell you how to do, you just have to exercise you're own judgement of what level of tightness on the screws is enough.

Like I said though, snug not tight.

some thing seem to be wrong with the  cooler (the Watter in it perhaps) ,or the thermal past ,because for a 4770K ,4.5Ghz is still not as far as it can go and can't push the temp to 100C°

check both and see where it leads

it might also be the mounting also

Check your backplate, there's a little bit cut in where the screw on intels mini backplate can go, I didn't see this first time and got horrible thermals with my h80i.
