What dafuq is a SSHD?

Go to solution Solved by hojnikb,

sshd as others pointed out is a HDD with a small ssd cache, that caches frequent files for faster speeds. It not nearly as fast as ssd, but its faster than a standard drive.

wd black^2 is a hdd and a normal ssd combined and acts a two separate drives. But its really mostly a pointless drive, because both hdd and ssd parts are slow by todays standards and its more expensive than a separate ssd+hdd combo.

What is an SSHD (or Solid-State Hybrid Drive)? I know what a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and Solid State Drive (SSD) is. But what the @#$% is an SSHD? Is it a HDD with SSD speeds? Or a SSD with HDD speeds? Or SSDs with HDD capacity? I don't understand, and Linus's review of the WD Blacksimply confused me further. Help, pleez*?

*No, my spelling is not horrible, it means "please".

Hybrid drives are storage devices that combine NAND flash solid-state drive (SSD) with hard disk drive (HDD) technology, with the intent of adding some of the speed of SSDs to the cost-effective storage capacity of traditional HDDs. The purpose of the SSD in a hybrid drive is to act as a cache for the data stored on the HDD, by keeping copies of the most frequently used data on the SSD for improved overall performance.

Adding to Wano1997's post, the Black2 is one enclosure containing two completely separate drives: a 120GB SSD, and a 1TB HDD. There is no caching involved whatsoever.

So the Black2 is designed to have your OS on the SSD part and mass storage on the HDD portion?

And the black is not an sshd, because of what you said.

Yes, that is how it was intended to be used, usually in a laptop with only one 2.5" drive space. You can have the speed of an SSD for your OS and most programs, and the capacity of an HDD for media.

A sshd is a hard drive with a ssd that automatically caches what you use most often to speed up the drive as a whole. You only ever work with the hdd capacity and the ssd caching is automatically done in the background.

The WD Black2 is a dual drive. It acts as a ssd until you activate the hdd part. It will then show up as a separate ssd and hdd.

WD Black2 is a dual drive meaning it has an ssd and a hdd, both for storage.

An sshd is a hdd with a caching ssd.
