Looking for a beast wireless router

Hey guys, I'm looking for a great router that will extend range and hopefully speed of the WiFi in my house. Wireless ac support would be nice but a/b/g/n is needed. What routers can you recommend and what kind of useable range can I expect with them (while using 802.11n)?

Also considering a range extender/repeater as an additional purchase.

ASUS AC66U and the Linksys WRT1900AC are both beast. I'm not sure if the WRT1900AC is out yet though.

 

If you don't REQUIRE ac, I know you said it would be nice, then the ASUS N66U is awesome, I have one and love it.

Check out Ubiquitis stuff. You can get a 600ft 300Mbps router for around $120. Or the Linksys EA6900, its AC1900

 

Heres the WRT1900 but its a little expensive however you could put a custom firmware on it and get the most reliable performance ever.

EDIT: Ok, looked at the linksys wrt one, I am slightly put off by the relatively slow 802.11n performance (most of my devices use wireless n), and it also looks quite expensive.

Just considering the ubiquiti option, would it be best to just get a wireless access point rather than a new router (using a BT Homehub atm)? I am simply looking to improve the WiFi speed and (most importantly) range.

 

Also would a repeater help? I don't know exactly how they work...

You can configure a router to be just an access point. The only thing you have to do is switching off the DHCP server in the router, so it doesn't conflict with the DHCP in your ISP's router.

I have a WRT 1900 AC and the performance over N is just fine for me. The main issue I have is the beast network infrastructure that my school has that causes a lot of interference for my router.

The hardware in the Linksys AC1900 is beastly on paper, but I'd wait.  Both openwrt and ddwrt groups are warning that they are nowhere near providing a *wrt firmware for it despite Linksys' claims of it being open firmware ready.  The stock firmware works, but is very basic in its feature set for a router of this price (at release anyway.)

 

The RT-N66U (or AC) are a very powerful, more mature option right now.  The stock firmware is a variant of WRT (despite a few security issues which were fixed) or you can go full dd-wrt.

 

I own both, and both perform very very well, but if you want/need more options and control, go for the ASUS for now.
