GPU Upgrade - 670 Sli, 780 Ti or wait for Maxwell

Go to solution Solved by spencermehta,

I would rather not get a second hand card and I can't find another 670 that is the same model as mine new from a website I trust. Since the verdict was pretty much split between SLI'ing and getting a 780 Ti I have decided to get a 780 Ti.

Thank you all so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

I currently have an Asus 4GB GTX 670 (GTX670-DC2-4GD5) and I run a 144Hz 1080p monitor. I'm thinking of upgrading because it just can't run the games I play anymore (such as BF4, DayZ SA) at graphics I am satisfied with. I have a few choices:

1. Get another 670 - Although this is the cheapest option they are pretty difficult to get a hold of these days and not too keen on SLI from what I've heard

2. Get a 780 Ti - An expensive upgrade but I will be able to sell my current 670 for £150-£200 on e-Bay or Amazon

3. Wait until the next line of Nvidia cards come out (which I believe are called Maxwell though don't quote me on it)

I guess the 780 Ti is a good option because I can just pair it up with another 780 Ti in the future however I have never SLI'd before and haven't heard positive things about it so would rather just stick with a single card and sell the current one I've got. Also how long will it be until the next Nvidia cards come out because if its one or two months I can wait but if its gonna be another 6 then I will probably go for the 780 Ti.

I will have to upgrade my PSU for all of these options since its only 500W so not really relevant.

Thank you all in advance for your help.

PC Specs:

Asus GTX 670 4GB DirectCU II

I would get a regular 780 since you are playing at 1080p then SLI later on or buy new cards.

If you really want to stick with a single card, I'd probably wait until Maxwell unless you're so dissatisfied with your current performance that you want an upgrade right now.. Personally, however, I'd rather just grab another 670 for cheap..

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

Do you know approximately when the maxwell cards will be out?

You are almost in the same situation as me, 670 & 144hz panel. I'm going to upgrade to a 780Ti as it will have the same performance as two 670 but draws less power and Maxwell is too far away for me to consider it.

144Hz goodness

If I were you I would wait, even if Maxwell high end cards doesn't come this summer, at least you have a card. But, you aren't enjoying gaming so I say buy a 780, not a 780ti.

Normally I'd say 770 for 1080p, but since you want to push 144hz I'd say get a 780ti and overclock the sucker and get a second one when you need it. Also you aren't gonna run DayZ SA at 144fps, its running on the Arma engine, it just won't happen until it gets optimized.

I know I have no chance of running it at 144fps, just a bit more than 20/30 on lowest graphics in cities :L

My 770 which is a bit faster than the 680 and technically should give quite a few more FPS in ARMA since the higher memory bandwidth drops to that in some cities, its just how ARMA is I guess :/

670 sli will push 120fps+ easily with a few settings tweaked depending on the game, especially BF4, your biggest issue might be your CPU, in order to maintain 144fps, you need a very beefy processor which means an Oc is almost always essential in newer games. You seem to have a non K i7, so no overclocking....

I also have a very bad cooling system so to overclock that would need to be upgraded too.

BF4 isn't really the problem, I can play it on high with with anti-aliasing and ambient occlusion off at around 90-100 fps. Its more DayZ that I'm having issues with.

I would just wait for Maxwell. Since you're simply just "unsatisfied", it seems like you could wait a few months.

My specs are at the top and I haven't really done much overclocking because my cooling system is really bad.

a 780ti alone is essentially a titan black. soo double the performance of a titan black
