Should I get an FX 9590 or FX 8350 and overclock it?

Hey guys, I dunno if this question has been asked before here (nothing showed up when I searched for it), so sorry if it has been.

Anyways, the motherboard I'll be using will be the ASRock 990FX Extreme9 since it's the only high-end motherboard with a fair price where I'm from... about $230. "What the?" Yes, I know. But the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 and Crosshair V Formula Z motherboards both go for almost $300 a piece! Not fair...

Back on track, would you guys suggest that I pay extra to get the FX 9590 (about $400) or should I just stick with the 8350 (about $250) and an H100i liquid cooler (about $110) and overclock it to be nearly equals with the 9590? Or is that even possible?

I don't really have a budget (I work hard!), but I still don't want to throw money into something that isn't really worth the extra cost.

Oh, and I should mention that this build will be paired up with a Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X 4GB and will be used for gaming, video/photo editing, and Blender.

Thanks!

I would get the 9590 and overclock it to 5.3GHz. The FX 9590 will run much cooler and consume less power than the 8350 @5GHz due to binning. The FX 9590 is a cherry-picked chip from a pile of 8350s so it's a much better overclocker. Don't listen to the guys telling you "get the 8350 and overclock it". The FX 9590 will overclock much more efficiently. I would expect an average 8350 to require 1.5v to reach 5GHz. An FX 9590 will only require 1.4v or less to reach its stock speed of 5GHz.

Both the exact same chips. Get the 8350 but you may not be able to overclock to the same speeds as the 9590. All depends on the chip you get.

----

the 9590's are 8000 series CPU's that when tested in the factory where more perfect so could "pass the test" of running at 4.8Ghz @ 225W. If the 8000 chip failed that test it would then be tested at 8350 specs (aka 4ghz at 125w) if it fails that then it moves down to a 8320 etc... etc.   All the exact same chips just less perfect.

----

Just on a side note avoid ASrock mobos. they are cheaper for a reason. (I said this before and got flamed but not 3 mins later a thread about that exact board appeared with issues) the ASrock boards don't OC well or OC for long periods of time without them getting coil whine or a PCI port giving up the ghost. If you get the 8350 you can save enough to move to the Crosshair V Formula-Z (my current board and I have had my 8350 running at 5ghz smooth as butter.

If considering the FX 9590 go haswell i7, 8320 makes more sense.

No he does not. The FX 9590 will run cooler, consume less power, and overclock further than an 8350 @5GHz.

At that cost an i7 is more fitting, power consumption? Please do not blaspheme around overclockers.

If you tell him to go with an i7, he could aswell go with a xeon e3 12xx v3. He won't miss the onboard graphics. It just doesn't oc very well.

how is that even...2 cores! you get 2 extra cores and 4 more threads. as for the FX chips they really are the same

however i would just go intel with a less expensive mobo

Do you think the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 (rev 4.0, whatever that means) would be good for overclocking, then? The two main things about the Extreme9 that attract me are the price tag (compared to other high-end boards) and that it supports 64GBs of RAM.

It's not a downgrade, I'm building another system... My current system, which I am very, very proud of I'll have you know, is my sweetheart and the system I use for all of my serious work. It's the heart of my office, the glory of my household, the reason I wake up every morning. But in all seriousness, this new AMD build is going to be put into an Antec Lanboy chassis and be moved around a lot (we're looking for a second house).

And to those that recommend I just get an i7... I had thought about it, but I don't have an AMD build yet. Yeah... not the best excuse ever...

ok i was just checking  :P  if you want an amd build just for a second rig then make sure your second house is somewhere very cold, a 9590 and 2x290's would make a good heater. also if you are going to put 4 sticks of ram in it dont get an amd because it isn't going to be very fast with them all in. for maximum e peen and benchmarks and central heating go for the 9590, if you are not bothered about those things then the 8350 will do just fine.  :)
