Hey everyone i am trying to decide between a msi r9 270 (not x) or a gigabyte gtx 660, they are about the same price ( the msi is $5 cheaper). They also have just about the same exact performance and usually i lean towards nvidia more. However since i plan on getting an amd fx series cpu, i was wondering if it would be worth it to get the r9 270 instead of the gtx 660 because mantel is out and could potentially make a difference. But i'm still not sure whether the difference will be worth it or if many games will actually incorporate it. Do you guys think that going with the r9 just to get mantel would actually be worth it especially since direct x 12 is said to be similar to mantel anyway.

I run my own indie game company called Color Dragon Studios where we are currently making a 2d platformer game called Small Earth.

Yes from what i have seen, more applicable to lower end cards, so yes i would say 270>>660 when using mantle. Do not forget future prospects with DX12.

If you already have an AMD card, then cool, be happy about mantle. But I wouldn't make any purchase decisions based on it. We see lots of promises but no actual numbers. Plus remember there's G-Sync on the Nvidia side. Also, why are you looking at a last gen card from Nvidia? What about the GTX 760?

For me it will be kind of beta DX12. It should be used until MS releases it. Mind you, AMD helps at DX12 so it's likely gonna get the best features of Mantle. For now it's surelly worth it as more and more developers declare their support. However, it should not be the prime reason to buy an AMD gpu (more like better price/performance if prices in your area aren't fracked up by coinminers).

DX12 has yet to prove it's worth, and a few unbiased folk said the driver was meh.

One thing to consider is this - While AMD have said they plan to make Mantle open for everyone, there's no word on either when that will be or if it will happen at all. There is also a lack of titles which support it right now, and with DX 12 around the corner doing something very similar, it's uncertain whether or not there will be huge support for Mantle. At least that's my understanding of the current situation anyway.

So the thing you may need to do is look at benchmarks of both cards, on DX 11 and decide based upon that. You have to buy for the experience you want right now. If you only play BF4, then great, buy the Radeon, huge gains. If not, might be worth reconsidering your choice.

The way I see it, Mantle is the best thing Team Red have going for them right now. For me personally, I'm with Team Green. GeForce Experience, more specifically, Shadowplay, is crazy-good

Except everyone already uses direct x, so switching to 12 would be MUCH more wide spead, and widely adopted than mantle..

Honestly, new nvidia drivers were shit, they only improved SLI and performance in a few games which were benefitting from Mantle. I mean, yeah that's fine but until DX12 hits the market it's all the same. And we still don't know how Mantle will be optimized in future games because it was rushed. Anyway, if prices in OP's area are inflated then geforce is a nobrainer, but if not then it's only worth getting for Shadowplay. G-sync doesn't seem like a factor, because if OP is aiming for a low-mid card then he will likely not have cash for a g-sync monitor - and they will be kinda expensive for a while.

mantle dont make a huge diffrence if you are using a fast cpu

but im using 2x hd 7870 with a 4770k

and with mantle enabled i get a decent performance boost and the game is buttery smooth

with mantle disabled i tend to get more stuttering and less fps

the leaked catalyst 14.4 beta is alot better if you use mantle i hope its going to release as fast as possible so people can try it out

im impressed

the r9 270 beats the 660 without mantle...

^ Especially when oc'ed. The 265 already beats the 660.

Mantle is entirely dependent on game developers adopting it, I just don't see that happening too much time and money would need to be spent. Only way I could see it being popular is if AMD funds some games that run on it that are really good. I wouldn't base my gpu purchase on mantle, it's just going to sit around for half a decade before support is discontinued.

Star Citizen and Civilization Beyond Earth both support Mantle.

Buy video cards based on price/perf, cooling, reliability, and aesthetics.

I do think mantle is going to provide a better VR experience due to it's faster rendering, something I hope star citizen will demonstrate.
