Corsair 330R - Planning my mod

troll_henriques
Well, i've just build a new system with this espetacular case (at least in my opinion). Here are the specs:

- i7-4770k

- Asus Z87-PLUS

- 16Gb (2x8Gb) HyperX Blue 1600MHz

- OCZ Fatal1ty 750W

- WD 1Tb HD

- Samsung EVO 120Gb SSD

- Corsair H100i

- Corsair 330r

- (coming soon) Asus GTX780 DirectCU II

But, there are some things i'd like to change in the build:

1 - Add a window to the side panel: i love seeing the inside of the case, with all those sexy looking components...

2 - Change the front painel: here i'd like some thoughts for what pattern, what material, how to do it... Don't get me wrong, i love the brushed aluminum style, but i hate, HATE plastic. I can't stand this "plastic" feel.

3 - Sleeving the internal cables: if there is a window, it must have sleeved cables. Nothing more awsome then that.

So, what i want here are a couple of things:

- The window: what type of finish - a Fractal Design cut, square cut or odd-shape cut? Please, give me some pics or references. With apparent screws or internal? And more important (and at the same time insane question): glass or acrylic? I know that sounds dumb, but i've seen that once and boy, that looked cool.

- The front: it's better just leave the way it is or do some type of modding? My original idea was changing it for real brushed aluminum, but it's kind of expensive. If someone can propose a type of finish, i would be very grateful.

- The sleeving: can i sleeve a semi-modular PSU without having to cut the hole of the PSU? Also, pre-sleeved or self-sleeved cables? Again, another dumb question, but it doesn't hurt to ask, right?  :D

Well, i guess that's it. If someone come up with another ideas, please leave them here, i would appreciate. Thanks for reading and... Bye!

Have you bought the 780 already? If not, please consider buying a EVGA 780, as you'll be able to trade it in for the 780 6gb when it comes out really soon.

why would 6gb on a 256bit bus be useful in anyway? Please inlighten me to this

For the front plastic the easiest is to wrap it in a black brushed aluminium wrap to get more metallic feel to it. Window shapes really depend on the style you'd like, I personally prefer the simplest square with slightly rounded corners look but something with an slight arc to it or cut like the 800D window can give it some style, but for material I highly suggest using glass since it has more clarity and just doesn't get scratched or attract dust like acrylic.

The 6Gb buffer only gives a real advantage if your running high resolutions like 4K, 1440p, or on multi monitor step ups, no real world advantage if your just using a single 1080p screen but hey gives you extra room never a bad thing since it's their trade in program.

Wow, thanks for the fast replyes. Well, let's get started:

Have you bought the 780 already? If not, please consider buying a EVGA 780, as you'll be able to trade it in for the 780 6gb when it comes out really soon.

The plan was the Asus DirectCU II because it runs cooler and with less noise. I'm aware that it has less performance than EVGA, but as this was meant to be a quiet rig, the Asus fitted better. Also, i'm not planning going for more than 1440p IF i find a small monitor (I don't like big screens) around 21 to 24 in display. But, for now, 6Gb of Vram is overkill for a 1080p display, wich i'm using.

However, i'm curious: how this trade-off works? It will work for international customers (since i live in Brazil, a little bit away from EUA)?

For the front plastic the easiest is to wrap it in a black brushed aluminium wrap to get more metallic feel to it. Window shapes really depend on the style you'd like, I personally prefer the simplest square with slightly rounded corners look but something with an slight arc to it or cut like the 800D window can give it some style, but for material I highly suggest using glass since it has more clarity and just doesn't get scratched or attract dust like acrylic.

Yeah, i was thinking the same, and i thought a 500d or 600d cut with apparent screws and inside-cut rubber. With glass, of course.

Now, for the front, if i wrap aluminum around, i don't know if that will work. I know that is used when the front of the case don't opens, don't have slots... that type of stuff. In my case, i think i'll bend a 2mm sheet of aluminum with some structural supports on the inside or make a mold and send to someone forge it for me, and then make the brushed look.

Because 4k screens keep getting lower and lower in price and who knows, the OP might get one and want to connect his PC to it before he upgrades in 5years+

Just wondering how are you planning for the hinge system to work, or are you planning to just have it as a removable door type thing that you take off completely on the rare occasion since you don't have any bay devices.

No hinges. Just the normal side panel with the glass window. I don't need to open, re-open, open one more time, etc... It will be closed for extended periods of time.

Now, that i didn't know. But, i can't buy it anyways as it costs almost a new case here in brazil. Also, modding will be fun. And if anything goes wrong, i can buy the 300r side panel.

I agree with you, but i don't like big screens. If you or someone else can recommend a "small" 4k display, i'll be more than happy. Same for the 1440p. Something around 21 to 24 in is perfect for me.

I'm not sure of any at the moment, as I said in the coming years when they come more and more affordable, size options will become much more varied.

Roger, thanks for the info. So could 2 x 780 DirectCU II power the 4k monitor easily or the 780ti is better for that resolution?

Definitely 2x 780s, 780 ti is only a good card if you aren't SLI-ing, if you are then it is a waste of money. Go with an EVGA card though as I mentioned, not an ASUS.
