Bad Friday is what I call it.

DeViLzzz

Why do they call it Good Friday when everything is closed? It is more like Bad Friday! I am not of faith and I want to be able to get groceries when I need them and you know I forgot so many things would be closed today. At least Shoppers Drug Mart near me isn't closed so that is something. My son is over and well when I got groceries last night I didn't think of Food Basics and others not being open today and so I didn't get more groceries to compensate for the Catholics forcing this store closing on me today. I get tired of this crap. Now lucky after much searching I found that our 24/7 Subway is open. Yay! Take that Catholics and Jesus/God lovers!

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

I always wondered why it's called good fiday, when we are commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus. The poor guy was crucified and we call it ´good friday´.

Atleast it's better than ´Long friday´, as it is called where I live.

To be fair Easter is a pagan holiday and Jesus was slapped on there just because churches needed something not pagan in it. Same with christmas.

One good thing about good friday, is the "Good friday agreement"   which helped resolve relations.

The Agreement set out a complex series of provisions relating to a number of areas including:

The status and system of government of Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom.
The relationship between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
The relationship between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Which is something, I guess

While christmas does come from a pegan celebration of the winter solstice, easter is no quite the same.

Easter comes from the Jewish holiday Pesach, where the jewish people celebrate the liberation from Egypt. So while easter isn't a christian tradition, at least it comes from the same line of traditions.

While the name and some of the imagery carry over, it not so much a rebranding, as it is a combination.

It also have to be said that the imagery with the bunnies only began in the late 1900 century, wíth the the rise of German nationalism and glorification of the old Germanic traditions.

The practice of decorating eggshell is ancient, pre-dating Christian traditions.[6] Ostrich eggs with engraved decoration that are 60,000 years old have been found in Africa.[7] Decorated ostrich eggs, and representations of ostrich eggs in gold and silver, were commonly placed in graves of the ancient Sumerians and Egyptians as early as 5,000 years ago.[8]

All these things carry over because people just want to celebrate anything. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_egg

The word good in that name actually has the meaning of holy or pious and not good as we use it today. In Germany, where I'm from the day is called Karfreitag which translates to Friday of sorrow a name that much more reflects the actual meaning of this day.

PS: Don't complain about closed shops, if you're living in North America. Come to Germany and realize that shops are closed every sunday and close at stupid early times on saturday.

Don't get me wrong, I do agree that the christian culture have borrowed a lot from the cultures that surrounded the mediterranean at the time of the first christians and from mainland Europe a bit later on.

But we also have to admit that cultures rarly developes in a vacuum, and at some point we have to be able to talk about a new culture. The christian culture is no different.

I know. I meant as a joke. Some people also like to call it holy friday due to the connotation that good has today.

Denmark (Just north of Germany). The funny thing, is that no one can agree to why it's called ´Long friday´ (Langfredag in Danish). Some say that it's becuase the stat lutheran church used to have fasting during this day. Other says it refers to Jesus' suffering on the cross.

It seems to be a scandinavian thing. I just looked up the swedish and norwegian words and they are quite similar Långfredagen (Swedish) Langfredag (Norwegian), whilst in Friesian which I've learnt is quite similar to Danish its called Goedfriday - more similar to the English word. Maybe you're just a bit impacient waiting for easter over there in the north ? :D

i think it works like that in most of Europe, and many other paces, in fact that's pretty normal... nothing to complain about.
