What drives should I update to? 3D animation

Huntdog

Hi guys

I'm going to be doing a 2 year diploma in 3D animation and I'm pretty sure I'm going to need more storage.

Currently have 120GB 840evo SSD as bootdrive and a 500GB Seagate Barracuda for storage.

The SSD only has 30GB free space left and the HDD only has 300GB free space left.

The programs we are going to use in the diploma are:

  • Houdini
  • Autodesk Maya
  • Nuke
  • Unreal Development Kit
  • Adobe After Effects
  • Zbrush
  • Microsoft Visual Studio

I also am an avid gamer (hence the SLI 780ti's) so I'll be using it for that to.

So what drives/sizes do you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance :)

if noone knows, you could always just add drives as you need more storage...

it could be nice to put your current active projects on an ssd (loading really big projects can take long) and your old inactive projects on a regular hard drive. (i really don't know about the sizes you are going to need)

maybe you could also think about something for backing up your projects (you don't want to lose day's of work because you didn't back up ;)  )

Western Digital Green 4TB, only for files.

It's slow, but it's quiet.

Make sure the rest of your rig is up to scratch as well, mostly for memory amount (those programs are heavy users).

You could do what darkspeedy26 suggested, which would work. You could also do a RAID 10 of some sort of NAS drive (WD Red or Seagate NAS are good choices) which would give you a substantial boost for very large projects and would give you more storage for your money.

How much storage do you anticipate needing?

If you are going to do any video or huge projects get as big and fast a drive you can now because from what I've seen with 3D Modelers and Video guys, they think what they have now is fine but always fill it up soon after they learn some tricks/techniques. Might want to also invest in some kind of cheap backup of your "test/fantasy" projects, to Blu-Ray or DVD or Tape. Because, unless you are a frugal file user and don't leave any "test" files/projects lying around you're going to fill it all up.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

I would go with a couple of WD Red Drives 1TB or 2TB in RAID 5. You can also add your current 500GB in the mix and use it as a scratch disk so that you don't destroy your brand new drives.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 - 3900x @ 4.4GHz with a Custom Loop | MBO: ASUS Crosshair VI Extreme | RAM: 4x4GB Apacer 2666MHz overclocked to 3933MHz with OCZ Reaper HPC Heatsinks | GPU: PowerColor Red Devil 6900XT | SSDs: Intel 660P 512GB SSD and Intel 660P 1TB SSD | HDD: 2x WD Black 6TB and Seagate Backup Plus 8TB External Drive | PSU: Corsair RM1000i | Case: Cooler Master C700P Black Edition | Build Log: here

Thanks for the advice so far guys

I have gone for a 2tb Seagate SSHD for storage for now (until/if I need more) and am contemplating getting a larger SSD with better quality flash for longer term reliability dedicated for current projects + my 1 or 2 most played games

any recommendations for the SSD?  I was looking at Intel 730 series for there reliability but idk.

My family's business has a supplier that sells adata & Intel products so I can get quite good pricing on those SSDs comparatively (for New Zealand standards) although the intel 730s are still quite pricey

so yeah... what do you guys think?
