i7 965 upgrade

I currently have an i7 965 in a maximus ii formula board but the rest of the system is pretty old, plus it only has sata 2 and the 1st pcie slot has problems.

Would it be worth my money to find a new x58 board with sata3 for example like a maximus iii gene to refresh the system? Since something like even an i5 4670k or 3570k with a new motherboard is going to run me 500-700 dollars where I live.

I could refresh the build and make a mini gaming/editing rig with a 760/770 with a new ssd.

Also does anyone know where I might be able to find such boards?

I would get a GTX 770 and a new ssd. If you want a new mobo look on ebay

Bit of a rough decision, mostly because that i7 965 doesn't look like a bad performer by any stretch. But the motherboard is the make or break decision. If you can get the board new for a good price I would say yes but for the most part I would look into investing on the new board AND CPU. :)

If you feel like you need a significant upgrade (ie you really need more performance), then it'd be better to upgrade to a newer platform.

That said, the 965 is still a pretty solid CPU, so I'd lean towards just a 'refresh'.  Browse through newer x58 boards on ebay and see if anything grabs you.

Like i mentioned, a new intel equivalent in my country(singapore) would cost around 500-700 for a cpu+mobo

thats why i'm leaning towards a refresh. i'd kinda rather drop 200 dollars on a mobo then go all out with a new build.

I will give ebay a shot, but most of the results turn up used and around the 200 range with shipping. i'm currently looking at a rampage iii gene to go inside a 350d

Also i mainly wish to upgrade due to the fact that my current motherboard pretty much has a dead 1st pcie slot and also no sata3.

Yeah, that CPU is still decent.  Maybe look on ebay of maybe even newegg or amazon will still have them. No point getting and SSD when your still on Sata 2. GPU could be worth it. Really up to you if you need them or not. SSD's running full speed make a huge difference.

EDIT - You can still get workstation boards...

Wait a min, can you clear this up for me? What mobo do you have exactly? Maximus II Formula is LGA775, I know because I have one and the Maximus III Formula is LGA1156, so pardon my confusion.

It's worth 'refreshing' the i7 965 which is an LGA1366 Extreme Edition CPU, but only if you can find a decent to good mobo with the features you want at the right price. When the P5W DH Deluxe mobo I had with my C2Q X9650 developed some RAM slot issues, I was in a bind as I'd wanted to keep the CPU but need a good mobo to go with it. I scoured the local tech forums and found a Maximus II Formula for a reasonable price. Needless to say, I grabbed it and now, it's my 3rd gaming rig with 8GB of DDR2 1066 KHX RAM and a HD7970, handles games quite well actually, so I believe your i7 965 would be worth salvaging or refreshing.

As for that Sabretooth X58, seems like a pretty good board, and cheaper than those on eBay, though being an RoG guy, I'd go for that Rampage III Gene.....but, that's just me. Anyway, with that Sabretooth, you can always sell the CPU and recoup a little of the cost.

sorry i made a mistake, i meant a rampage ii extreme! If possible i'd like the gene for the form factor.

seller seems to only want to sell as a set. I think i will try and look more locally first for a good board before resorting to ebay/amazon

Maybe explain your situation. Tell him that you already have an i7 965 and that the i7 950 is not needed

I think the concept of an AIO is pretty cool, not that powerful for my taste but it is a space saver

That seller would prolly not go for it simply because he stands a better chance of selling the mobo as a set. As usual, my recommendation is for the TS to get an RoG board, something like the Rampage III Gene in one of the eBay links (yes, admittedly, a flag waving, card carrying RoG fanboy B) ). TS is being prudent, try the local tech forums Garage section, who knows, he might be able to find a gem..... ;)  I lucked out since I'd wanted an RoG board for my X9650, and one happened to come on sale a little after I'd begun my search.
