Is this possible? How do I do this?

megadarkwood

I have an old router that I want to use as a wireless range extender or wireless access point .etc

Basically I want to be able to plug the router into my PC, and connect to the other router via it. Confusing, I know.

Is this possible? The router is a d-link DIR-655

no, your router does not appear to be DDWRT or Tomato compatible. And I seriously doubt stock firmware has that functionality

someone can correct me if I'm wrong

Error: 410

You could just plug it into another ethernet port in your house, or have one power-line brick plugged into it and the other plugged into your current router, then it's a matter of digging around inside your router...(not literally)

Yeah the only option would be to upgrade the firmware to Tomato or something like it.

What you could do (although I don't know this router, so I don't know whether this is possible with it) is plugging it into your PC via a standard ethernet cable, disable the DHCP-server and assign a static IP-Adress to it (must be in the IP-range of the main router, so if your main router has 192.168.1.1/24 you should assign something between 192.168.1.2/24 and 192.168.1.250/24). After that you can connect the Dir-655 to your main router and it should have network access.

I've done that with a RP614v4 and a RT-N56U and it worked flawlessly.
