Anyone had any experience with magic lantern

Go to solution Solved by alrobles,

ML runs on top of the Canon OS, it doesn't replace it. You always have access to both.  I've only been using it for a few months but can't see myself shooting video without it now.  I'm running it on my 5Dm3 with no problems really and mine is from a nightly build since no stable build has been released.  I don't believe anyone has ever reported bricking their camera. There have been issues but to my knowledge they were all fixed.  It can be confusing on how to install it the first time and finding a thorough guide can be difficult as well. You might have better luck since there is a stable release for the 600D. ML runs off of the memory card so make sure to always power down and wait a few seconds before removing the card. It writes stuff to the card during power down so it can corrupt some thing if you remove it too quick or so I've heard. Not sure exactly how it works but just to be safe power down and make sure not to format the card with ML on it. My camera has two card slots so I just have ML on the SD card with it locked always in the camera.  As far as warranty, from what I've read Canon will still honor your warranty as long as it can be determined that ML was not the cause of the failure.

The cool things about ML are the overlays. Lots of useful info you can have while recording : Battery %, remaining card capacity, temperature, level, histogram, zoom box to check focus, spot metering, audio levels, focus distance,.  All while recording.  There is a bunch more I haven't really played with yet either.  There are some nice power saving features as well that will dim the screen when you aren't doing anything for a while.  There are other fun stuff like RAW video, HDR video and time lapse stuff.

Here are some photos to get an idea of what it looks like.

My sister bought a 600d for her video making course at uni and she wants to flash it with magic lantern but i told her to wait while i got some more information beforehand so essentially does anyone have any experience with this and what are the potential risks involved also what are the main benefits and will doing this void any warranty.

thanks in advance Moose

@alrobles did a very good job of explaining ML. I'm using it now for a year or so I think, and it is truly amazing. The only sad thing is that ML can't fix the audio issues DSLRs have on the 600D, it uses a different audio chip and nobody knows which it is.

A very quick install guide.

1. Make sure you're running canons latest firmware. (or the one that ML suggests)

2. put the SD card in the camera and do a low level format.

3. Put the SD card in your pc and put all the files from ML on it, in the root folder.

4. Put it back in you're dslr and update the firmware.

5. Follow onscreen instructions and reboot camera.

6. You are now running ML.

well said but probably because it's a DSLR... audio in these device is quite fine but needs more improvement.. But you can use external Recorders(Zoom h1, Tascam etc) to benefit from these bottlenecks though =)
