help installing kraken g10,thermal paste on gpu core

so i stripped my card of its weak pathetic cooler and im ready to install the g10 and h55,

but the gtx 660 core is pretty small,

and the base of the H55 is bigger,

should i remove the pre applied thermal paste and just use the pea method with ARCTIC MX-4?

I'd leave it, it's not really going to do much. Manufacturers usually put on too much in the first place and I haven't seen it harm a card so far.

Remove it. It's way too widespread for that small gpu chip. It's going to spread everywhere on the die and maybe outside its edges. The one you want to replace it with is also better.

thanks for the help,

i did remove it and clean everything with alcohol,

but the temps aren't as good as i expected,

could it be that because the gpu core is so small and the h55 surface is much larger, there isn't enough heat transfer happening?

well, what are your temps and what were they before? Maybe re-seat the block/tighten it up more

im afraid to tightin it more, since there is no sound indication when it is tighten'd enough.

i have them in sli and the top card reached 90 degrees and the lower one reached about 70,

when only 1 is in the system its stays on 70 degrees.

right now the water cooled one is in the system alone,

and it also reaches to about 70 degrees.

i think ill try to reseat it tomorrow.

and the card is also throttling itself to hell,

maybe its because i have no fan connected to the 4 pin on the gpu?

i have everything hooked up to the motherboard.

yeah 70°C is way to high. It should be around 40. Can you post a pic of where you have the fans/rad mounted and stuff? :)

Also yeah you could connect the 3pin directly to the psu (via molex) and see how its doing on full 12v.

i dont have the rad\fan mounted, its currently out of the case until i finish everything.

ill try everything you suggested,if it doesn't help ill try to reseat it,and if it still doesn't help ill return to my stock cooler...

Did you not forget to reapply tmi?

i didn't forget.

meh pretty frustrating..

Is the water block actually touching the core? I have a G10/H55 on my 780 and it idles at 19-20, load won't go over 39. Something is definitely wrong with your application.

I'd give it a close eyeball before just trying to tighten it more, can you move the block at all when it's installed? I remember reading somewhere that some gpus needed a copper spacer under the block.

Well even though the block is as tight as the screws allows, there still may be a tiny space between the block and gpu, that's why i asked if the block still moves on the gpu even though it's tight.

good news,

apparently one side of the block wasn't tight enough,

even though i did tighten it in the X method.

the back plate is kind of crooked,so maybe that had something to do with it.

it seems like the card is maxing around 43C at furmark with stock fan on 60%,im guessing that if i get 2 quality fans i could lower it to 40.

my other problem is that the card is now throttling for no reason...

yeah, nice.

its throttling because of Furmark, dont use Furmark. Bench the temps with games/valley/heaven instead.

running heaven 4 it still throttled a bit,not something serious,90% of the time it was on the right gpu clock.

running far cry 3 it didn't throttled.

thanks for your help  :)

pretty weird that it runs FarCry3 with no problem lol. My FC3 always died when i had an OC enabled :D

But yeah, as long as the coreclock doesnt vary by too much it should be fine.

You should be able to tell if it's contacting the GPU, however 43 in furmark is pretty good.

the block was crooked before so there wasn't full contact between the core and the block,

but now there is.
