Calling out gtx580 owners

papeles
Go to solution Solved by KamiKatze,

@papeles

I got myself a GTX 580 reference design (Point of view) for the exact same purpose of passing the time until Maxwell releases their high end cards.

I'd say it's a good value. I got mine for 120€ a month ago. It runs Titanfall maxed out, bioshock infinite too. Far Cry 3 runs on High with 4xAA. Haven't really tested more. All were in the 40-60 FPS range with mild dips. Your milage may vary. I haven't yet tested how hard the 1.5GB VRAM bottleneck the card but i don't think it's too bad.

I run stock voltages (1V) because the stock cooler is rather meh for overclocking, and i overclocked it by 7.5% (i think 830 MHz core), then it got unstable.

The stock cooler isn't really noisy but not silent either. The rest of my system is super silent, the GPU is the noisiest part. At idle it's pretty much inaudible, at load it blow pretty hard. :D

My fan 'curve' is flat until 55°C and the goes straight up to 85 °C (100%).

In valley benchmark i get 80-84 °C. In games it runs just 73-78 °C so pretty 'cool' and quiet actually.

My screen is 1920x1200

summary: a good value to bridge the time @1080p. You should look out for HD 7870s though. However i think 80€ for a 580 is almost a steal, if it's still good in shape. It can't loose that much value from there either. So a perfect card to sit and wait, and enjoy some games while doing so.

Edit: i wouldn't wait another month or so, just because maxwell could release soon. A GPU looses around 10€ value per month (at least that's my milage).

But a GTX 580 doesn't! :D Especially not one for 80€..... As i said. If it's still solid, get it!

So, i have a chance to buy a gtx580 for a cheapass price. I consider this to still be a good performer in alot of game at 1080p and i will possibly make this my card untill the 800 series come out.

So, this guy i'm possibly buying it from has a zotac580 and a Palit 580(3gb version).

Considering what i've been reading over the internet:

-Is this a very hot card? Were there bad batches of them or what? I see alot of heat complaints.

-In case you have/had one or at least experience with one (friend or whatever) did it run good to you? Was it hot and noisy?

-More specifically, did you had any experience with a Zotac or Palit card? Is the build quality ok?

Please take in consideration that its a second hand card with no warranty or whatever, but i also didnt waste money on a dud.

Last question:

-probably could have a chance to buy a hd6870 even cheaper then the gtx580. Would you advise me this one instead?

Thanks in advance guys

i have used a 580 in the past though not the same model you have the option to get. the heat complaints are due to the fact that fermi (500 series cards) was just a very warm running architecture. i had used the msi twin frozr oc model of the 580 with an aftermarket cooler, provided its not a reference design cooler on the card you would be buying i dont think youll have any issues at all but of course if possible ask to see the card in working order before the purchase is made.

i will also add that yes the 580 is still a relatively solid card in the 1080p range however depending on the price point your getting it for there may be other options

the 5xx cards are a lot cooler than 4xx cards

i own a 570 coming from a deafening 480 card

also how much are you buying it  ?

i would heavely recommend buying a used 7xxx series card they are really cheap

480 was way hotter then the 580, you can't compare those.

500 series are factually hotter than the 400 series, throttling and a revised cooler help it out.

Around 70-80€ for the 3gb card

No. My options are limited for what i mentioned. I also Won't waste money on "newish" cards since im aiming for a 880 or so when they come out. I just want a cheap middle term card that doesn't limit me much for a few months and considering my options i think that the 580 is good enough

the 570 is pretty much the same as the 480 and there is a big difference in power consumption (less heat)

That's cool. A 580 or even a 480 are still very capable cards a 1080p.

@qwertywarrior the 570 is a watered down 480, less rop's and lesser memory bus. The 570 is clock for clock slower, but it's factory higher clocks pass on the illusion as a 480 with better tdp.

So, my only concerns are:

-Will it be a perma 90º card?

-Will they be noisy?

-Any oppinions on Zotac and Palit build quality or anything else i should know?

Im asking this as general questions, I haven't asked the seller yet! I just don't wan't a loud toaster inside my case xD.

Thanks for the answers so far

I had a 580 back in the day

yes they run hot

I found that the refrence cooler made a lot of noise

I mounted a aftermarket cooler and all problems were solved.

They are still great card and run most games fine on high on 1080p

does it really matter a 580 even uses less power too

and even if the 570 has less rops etc still toe in toe with the 480 in pretty much every benchmark with a less heat and power

the 5xx cards didnt just have better coolers  the problem with the 4xx cards were that they had leaky transistors that caused the high heat

Used to run 3 580's in my system, all reference cards and they weren't particularly noisy nor were they particularly hot. I sold two of them a year ago because I got fed up with multi GPU nonsense but to this day I'm still running a reference 580 (EVGA SC+). It's still a very capable card by all means, and the only game I've played where I've run into problems is Battlefield 4. By run into problems I do not mean instability, but the good ol' 580 just didn't cut it for Ultra, other than that it's still crushing everything I throw at it. I'm definitely not gonna swap mine before we see the "800" series, and that might be a good while.

To anyone who says that 5xx were hotter than 4xx you have absolutely no bloody idea what you're talking about. Owned multiple of both 480 and 580 and both non reference and reference designs. The 480 were absolutely horrid in regards to noise and heat, where as the 580 (even the reference ones) were much easier to cope with (and performed a good deal better than the 480 as well).

@qwertywarrior no none of this matters, it did back at ocn i had the fastest air 480 going hitting 4.2ghz mem and 920mhz core with custom firmware (nearest 570 was at 1002mhz under dice. The stuff i typed only really matters for bench situations. The 580 is the crowned jewel of the fermi era.

@hans yes the 580 is cooler with it's revised cooler, but it throttles under furmark, and the vapor chamber tested on a 480 gave colder results, once again i am talking in a bench mind, real world and for the majority, the 580 is cooler in a none enthusiasts hands.
