Any tips for getting better at BF4??

MrTomnus

So I've had BF4 for a while now. I'd say I've put 10 or 15 hours into playing it so far. I'm only level 2 still, and I still think I'm as hopeless as when I started. I used to play BF3 on my PlayStation before I got my PC and I wasn't the greatest at that either...

I understand that Battlefield is a much more tactical game than other shooters, so I've been trying to play with that in mind - checking corners, playing like my life depended on it. But I still feel like everyone has the edge. I have never won a close quarters firefight before. I try to make choices about where I spawn based on what the enemy team might do next, and I've taken plenty of objectives on my own. But when it comes to the actual shooting, I'm kind of poor.

Here is a video I just recorded of some gameplay on a conquest match (not promoting a YouTube channel in any way, I have never recorded a single video :D). Please let me know what you think and if there is anything I can improve on.

-had to change graphics settings for OBS to display running Mantle, so the video starts at about 30 seconds in-

Also this video was recorded using QuickSync! I set the bitrate to 7000kbps at 30fps. I think the quality is quite nice. I had no frame drops either and in game frames were always above 60 :) Looks like it works nicely!

EDIT: I just uploaded another video, taking in the advice everyone gave me. It was one of my best games yet! You are welcome to add any more comments on how I played, I always want to keep improving! Thank you to everyone who helped :)

Your gameplay didnt seem to bad to me. no glaring flaws - I tend to find hip firing when close up yields better results as your aim moves slower when aiming down sights, and people tend to swerve and bunny hop when close up

you will find different weapons better for different roles, PDWs and shotguns dominate close up, a little SMG hip firing VS 200 round support gun hip firing, the support gunner will lose.

It takes time to get used to that. Your aiming seemed fine and will improve over time, you seemed reasonably aware of your surroundings as much as you can in BF4, maybe just try different loadouts. Perhaps you just dont get on well with that particular weapon/sight etc etc.

It makes quite a large difference I find. I tend to use quirky weapons and I use what feels natural. even the aesthetics can affect how you play

EDIT: also try play on servers as local as you can. I try play UK servers or at least Europe so i can get decent ping times

If you get a couple of your friends to play it with you, preferably about the same skill level or slightly higher than you. Now play as a team as it takes the stress off of each other and give you as much time as possible to get your aim sorted. By practicing like this you don't have to worry about enemy positions by yourself you have maybe 3 or 4 people working together to do it. Giving you and your team mates the opportunity to worry on some issues collectively and the skills that make you better singularly.

Oh God, I don't particularly want to play anything more difficult! I'm close enough to not enjoying playing BF4 as it is :P But I have played Loadout and I'm pretty good at that actually :)

Yeah being left handed I use my right hand with the mouse. It's taken getting used to but after about a year I feel a lot better with it. I've forgotten what it was like using it with my left hand :D

I don't know about you, but to me, the solution to every problem pertaining to Battlefield 4 would be to uninstall that buggy bullshit.

Haha, that could be half the problem. I've turned network smoothing down to 10% so it shouldn't be an issue with connectivity.

This is what I would love to try. Unfortunately none of my friends own Battlefield 4 for PC. I feel like playing with friends would be a lot more enjoyable too :(

1, When somebody shoots you and you get behind cover throw always a medic pack.
Because when you have like 40% left you will die from 2 bullets so never try to peek out of a corner if you don't have at least 90% health.

2. When somebody is directly in front of you like on the crashed ship don't aim, use hip fire instead that 1 second will save your life.

3. When you shoot you will show up on the minimap.
So don't try to shoot other people on another island with an assault rifle.
Try to stay at medium to short range to not give your position for an enemy that isn't even threat.

4. If you are the gunner on an helicopter always look at the front/side not the back.
The pilot will always try to have a view on the enemy so looking in his direction will make it easier to find and kill enemies.

5. Never burst fire if the enemy is right in front of you.

I'm just going to say it. Get hacks...lol kidding. Just burst fire your weapons and play the objectives. KD doesn't prove much if anything at all. a guy with a good kd might not be a good team player. Oh and start pressing q and when squad leader mark objectives by hovering over them and pressing q

Start playing on small maps like zavod and play Team deatmatch.

Don't run around the map like crazy but move slowly and watch every corner.

Find a weapon that you like.

Ever considered getting a ambidextrous mouse?

As someone with 600 hours between BF4 and BF3, I have a few notes:

1. Your reflexes need a lot of work. Like at the start, you should have instantly turned in the direction of the incoming fire and fired back, not caring if you live or die, getting a few hits are still worth it. As above, play some TDM before moving on to conquest.

2. I noticed you spend a lot of time thinking where to aim and when to fire your weapon. Less thinking, more action. This isn't much of a thinking-mans shooter, just stay with your squad and follow their lead if needed. Twitch shooting is more valued than careful approaches.

3. When ADS'ing, stay on the move. You're not a recon or support player, so you should be moving as much as possible.

4. Don't fire at players a long distance away, get closer before firing. Firing at a distance isn't all that helpful with an assault rifle and gives your position away for a nearby sniper, or for the enemy to fire back and kill you.

I have already tried that and I can't see to get into it. The gameplay just feels really clunky. It's hard to describe.

Thank you for the tips! I don't think about throwing medkits, I really should. I know it really annoys some people :P

You make a good point. Because I think I'm not great I do just usually run around and find objectives. At least I can appreciate how pretty the game is while I do that :D

Okay, I'll try some TDM :) Because I'm level 2 though I don't know if I have many weapons, if any at all, unlocked. I'll check and try some different ones out. Maybe that is the problem too!

Huh. I always thought CS had the tighest gameplay. It has consistant aim patterns and movement also nade arcs are possible to control and land some amazing stuff.

I think the reflexes has to do with me using my right hand too. But at that instant I was pretty certain I was dead, so I just ignored the guy. I guess it's better to give it a go though!

I'll try to act more quickly. I just prefer to shoot efficiently; try to get the enemy down as quickly as possible, perhaps predict their movement.

Maybe I should switch to Recon :D I seem to do a lot of distance shooting.

Have you played through the campaign? The M249 is pretty good. You should try it.

I haven't finished it, but I've tried a good amount of the weapoons. I might go back and see.

If you really want to get better at surviving/winning combat situations as a soldier... play TDM or Domination.

A lot of PC players hate these gametypes because they feel too small and they only utilize a small portion of the maps and they think it's too much like CoD... but there are too many variables in Conquest and Rush. You can be doing fine fighting infantry, and then a tank rolls up and you have to run for your life if you're a medic...

Some may call this bad advice... but you can learn to take down/use vehicles later. They're actually pretty easy (except for maybe jets). TDM and Domination if you want to perfect your infantry combat and learn how to outwit/survive while on foot.

I can't play right now because I just sent my GPU in for RMA earlier this week. Once I get it back though, I'll be playing more BF4 on PC (hopefully). So you can hit me up on battlelog, if you like. I don't have a mic though.

Cover and movement are the crucial parts, then knowing the action hotspots and assessing your surroundings (map awareness) aiming and twitch shooting are of a lower priority in battlefield, but can help in fighting large groups, and tight areas. Type mrmike655 in google it will show up recon-uk there, plenty of bf3/bf4 beta vids, don't expect god like gameplay, but it may help you.

You need to look around a LOT more your awareness of your surroundings needs to go up you were walking around like a horse with blinders on not checking your surrounding, nor checking your corners.

Well, let me start by saying that practice is the mother of wisdom, there is no god formula that will make you dominate everybody in 5 minutes. I'd recommend playing your first few days mostly DOM and TDM, the fast paced infantry only gameplay will get your gun game better and improve your reflexes. It will also get you leveled up fast so you don't have to use that crap of a gun, M416 is my favorite gun and you unlock it really fast. Also don't be so stationary, when I think of it people not moving make 90% of my sniper kills. Also work on your situational awareness, listen to the sound cues, look around yourself often so you don't get flanked. If you want, you can add me to your friends and I can show you/teach you some things.

Well, let me start by saying that practice is the mother of wisdom, there is no god formula that will make you dominae everybody in 5 minutes.

This mixed with tighter aiming and recoil control would make you an infinity more effective soldier on the battlefield.

I don't know about you, but to me, the solution to every problem pertaining to Battlefield 4 would be to uninstall that buggy bullshit.

The game is fine. Stop complaining about bugs that were patched out a long time ago. Honestly I never had a problem with the game, so it annoys me when people call it broken when it's perfectly fine. Just because ea is a crappy company doesn't mean their games are bad.

Thanks guys, that'd be nice actually. If I could play and work together with a few people I think it'd be more fun and a little easier to play :)
