Win 7, 8 & 8.1. Is there a gaming performance difference?

I was just thinking about this, is there really a reason to adapt to Win 8 / 8.1? My laptop came with Win 8, Lenovo recommends upgrading to Win 8.1 but will there be any performance loss if I format and install Win 7?

Why do people always want to go backwards... Windows 8 is better in every way and you can fix everything about the interface.

Windows 8.1 has better resource usage optimization in general and the DirectX 11.2 and such improves your gaming experience a little.

There was, and still is, a big performance difference in BF4 between Win 7 and Win 8.1. People have reported up to 20-30FPS difference in some situations between the two OS's when they upgrade.

I just reread the OP. If your laptop came with Windows 8, just update to 8.1 and leave it at that. There's NO reason to downgrade to Windows 7.

I personally got 15FPS increase in BF4 with ultra settings from going from Windows 7 to 8 and then 8.1. You can check the specs of my system in the signature below.

Only for games that use the Direct X 11.2 optimizations. Other than that, no there is no huge benefit on either side.

windows 8 eats all the resources of the laptops at my work that have it, it's just like vista, 8.1 utilizes the resources a little better but since they don't game and speed is essential I usually wipe them and install windows 7. (sue me for having a shitty experience with win 8.)

when was the last time you did a fresh install of 7 on that system? I do OS installs on a regular basis and this is just my personal findings. I mostly find the problem with windows 8 on laptops though, I have it on a Virtual machine on my pc and find it ok to use, I just haven't found a reason for me to upgrade though, maybe once direct X12 comes out and win 9 I'll upgrade again, otherwise I'll stick to 7 simply for the customizations I've done configuring custom themes (edits everything) and the cool login screens I created. (speed on win 7 ultimate is not an issue to me, my desktop and laptop boot in under 10 seconds.

Sounds like you forgot to install a driver or two.

Quick answer is YES! The more complicated answer is DEF with new games, and a bit better with lots of games or about the same. I would use windows 8.1 for gaming because it does have performance increases over 7 in games. It has been proven. When BF4 beta was out this guy had 7 and was having trouble. He switched to windows 8 and then his problems were almost gone. Windows 8.1 does work typically better with games.

 

You're either going to see quite a bit of improvement, little improvement or basically the exact same. Sometimes it's basically the same but maybe a couple fps lower here and there but a couple fps higher here and there. There really isn't a disadvantage though. Either games are going to be better or basically the same from what I have seen.

There is indeed a performance improvement in some games with 8.1. However, its nothing huge like a huge driver update

yeah, that makes no sense. besides, a lot of those win 8 laptops were OEM so it required no extra driver installations, however I did do on some, if the CPU is an atom or anything less powerful than an i3 the performance suffers.

 

it also easily eats 2 gb of ram compared to win 7

Windows 7 Is a resource hog, Vista is even worse. They did somewhat improve in 7, but its still a huge Memory hog.

 

Windows 8 doesnt use as much memory as far as I know... Vista had memory leaks.

8.1 is better in most ways, if you look at the things that aren't clearly obvious, you see so many improvements.
