Windows Phone 8.1 adds support to Passbook files natively

PocketNow reported, Microsoft has adopted Apple's PassBook standard, which more and more services are supporting that. Microsoft added support of Passbook Files in Windows 8.1 and Microsoft Wallet.

Microsoft’s launch of Windows Phone 8.1 has marked a turningpointinthe operatingsystem. While itisjusta dot-one upgrade to what was currently out there, itfinally bringsWindows Phone up-to-speed with the other competing platforms when it comes to features. Microsoft is not just being smart about adding features, but also in adopting emerging standards that could become popular.

Apple’s Passbook hasn’t necessarily been the most acclaimed feature that we’ve foundsince iOS 6, butwe haveseen services like airlines continuously support the service. It is rather convenient that the service will keep a wallet of all your coupons and cards, and it does have a future as longas more services keepsupportingit. Microsofthasdecidedtojoin Apple and provide support in Windows Phone 8.1 to Passbook files. Any passbook coupon or card that you receive on a Windows Phone will automatically be added to Microsoft Wallet for your convenience.

We haven’t had a chance to test the service, and see if Microsoft Wallet is as practical as Passbook, where cards are automatically accessible to you on the lock screen once your boarding time for an airline comes close. Hopefully Microsoft will follow this trend with other service in order to make other services a standard.

Might be ignorant, but what are those Passbook files?

store coupons, boarding passes, event tickets, store cards, 'generic' cards and other forms of mobile payment

Not sure if this helps but I think it just stores these types of files. Sorry if this didn't help. :/

Windows Phone 8.1 to me imo is sort of like a cheaper version of an iPhone with Android like features (quick toggles in notifications and swipe keyboard). Wonder how many people actually use the Passbook feature.
