Is a Core 2 Duo E8500 worth $20 and some change (US)? Reason being is I have a motherboard laying around from @Ryan Leech, only to find out it doesn't like my processors. I could get an E8500 for just over $20, and it would perform great for what it would have to do.

 

EDIT: Let me clarify. My mom will be buying this. Not me. It won't have any impact on the 4 quarters currently in my possession.

This is gonna be my NAS. Before my old board and PSU popped I was using it (had about 500GB of storage, only 1 drive made it)

What's the motherboard as some of them you can put LGA 771 Xeons in once you heat up a razor blade and cut the plastic notches out of the socket and put a flexible pcb sticker on the Xeon plus they're like $35 for a E5450 which is a 80 watt quad vs the 105+ watt core2 quads and it has a whopping 12MB of cache vs 6-8MB.

Here's the support list. It looks kinda like what HP would use (looks almost EXACTLY like an LGA 775 version of my grandma's HP mobo) so I doubt it would support this kind of shenanigans.

I still used a e8400 till last year for games at 4ghz. That CPU will run games like Bioshock with ease and is fast as hell inside Windows. Those CPU's OC like champs. With a SSD that thing would scream as a browsing/light gaming machine.

 

Wasn't until games like Guild Wars 2, BF4 that it wasn't enough. Will run all those old games and indie games like champs. Should run most new single player games pretty darn well also.

Mine went to 4ghz on stock voltage from 3. Most e8400's would do 3.6 at stock voltage and you didn't even have to touch the ram speed if I remember right. Wolfdales were pretty darn awesome .

My Sempron (even unlocked) was pretty good, but my board just sucks. And after the one short from my LED strip, the board struggles to maintain 3.6 at stock voltage.

Don't spend annny money until you have enough.

That's what I did for my rig. Took me almost a year. (I have a job)

I want to, but I don't think my grades will really allow that (curse this rather young age). But still, my mommy gets it so I'm all good.

Bad grades? Spend the time you would other wise use working to raise your grades?

If I went with the logic my mommy would buy everything for me I wouldn't have a High end PC

I'd go for quad. I changed from E8400 to Q6600 for €40 in between. But yeah thats good deal. Those are still kicking nicely with lighter OS like Vista.
