What are these "hertz" you speak of?

Ok, are hertz on a monitor like the max FPS you can get on the monitor before you see no difference in the game? 

 

Like, an HDMI on a 4K display would max out to 30 fps in a game...

And a DisplayPort on a 60 hertz screen would max out to 60 fps in a game... 

 

I don't know exactly where I got that from, but I'm confused as to exactly what the difference is. I'm sure 60 hertz is fine for me, but y'know. I'm curious as to how this affects the display.

AFAIK, it's the amount of times the image on the screen is refreshed per second.

Yes, if a monitor is 60Hz, you can only see from 0-60FPS, anything above that is wasted and may cause issues. Same with 30, 75, 120, 144, 240, etc. It's not displaying those extra frames at all, it just shows 60FPS regardless.

It's the maximum frames you can get before you start to get screen tearing, as the gpu is trying to output more frames than the monitor can handle, this results in two images being displayed on the screen at once.

If you're monitor is 60 hertz, the maximum FPS you will see will be 60, I think you can extrapolate from there :)

Hertz is a unit of frequency basically its anything that is equal to one cycle a second. With respect to monitor that would be the number of times a monitor can update the images in a second.

Hertz is an SI derived unit for frequency. It means s^-1 (per second). Therefore 60 Hz means 60 per second and you can see 60 frames per seconds. A higher refresh rate (hertz) means that the image is updated more frequently and therefore smoother. 3D normally requires >=120Hz to get 60Hz per eye.

Similar to the 'native resolution' argument, hertz (Hz) refers to the maximum amount of time a display panel can refresh a second. The higher the Hz, the smoother the image (like FPS), so if you have a 60Hz monitor, using V-Sync to limit the FPS to 60 will make it sync with the monitor, which is why the tearing goes away.

 

Tearing is when the monitor is refreshing when the GPU hasn't yet finished rendering the image, so only half or so of it will display for a split-second.

hz is basically this - the amount (or period) in which an object refreshes (updates) per second.
