Help With Dual Booting Linux

Hi! I really want to use Linux, but, for obvious reasons, don't want to switch to it for 24/7 use. I think I will very likely use Ubuntu, but I have never installed, let alone used Linux very much. Can you suggest me the best version of Linux to dual boot and give me a little walk through of how to do it?

I wish I could easily install Mavericks though :/

Thanks!

Since you have a pretty powerful PC, just go with regular old Ubuntu. Use the Wubi installer (REALLY simple), or just do a regular install with an .iso. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-ubuntu-with-windows

How many partitions do you have?

Just my Windows partition, though I have 3 drives to choose from.

To install it, basically put it on a flash drive, make a partition and install it?

Nvm, I'll try and follow the steps with the link you gave me and ask for help if necessary. Thanks!

I'd use Mint as Ubuntu you have it install things to get it fully working as well as the amazon crap that's in the OS that spies on you.

It comes with spyware preinstalled. Make sure that you remove it.

I would recommend Gentoo or Arch if you actually want to learn something. If you just want to follow wizards and click things that look different than on Windows then use Ubuntu or whatever.

Flash (easy) and sometimes Ubuntu doesn't play well with somethings like generic wifi adapters also I prefer to install everything from terminal (I recommend you do too) put a "-y" minus the quotes after the command to auto yes everything.

All your searches in 'Dash' are sent to Amazon.

Ooohhhh..... Good thing I don't use vanilla Ubuntu.

@tmcclelland455

Apparently that tutorial in the link doesn't work for Ubuntu 13 and not with UEFI BIOSes? I'm done downloading it now.

And I have to put it on a CD. Will a thumb drive work?

As long as you can boot from a USB drive, it should work.

How would I know I can boot from one?

Most modern motherboards can do it (hell, even my old one from the Socket 478 days can do it). Personally, I would use PowerISO to make a flash drive bootable with the .iso, and then find out whichever button pulls up the boot menu when your computer is booting, then mash that thing. Select the USB device (whatever it's called) and you should be golden.

I just got my flash drive! I also downloaded PowerISO, but I'm not sure how to use it. Can I just move the install of Ubuntu onto the drive?

Thanks for the help by the way.

I'll make a quick video. Give me... 3 or so minutes.

EDIT: And don't mind the video quality if it blows. :P

Okay @TheNinjaNextDor, here you go! I had to go with 480p since I didn't have time to wait for the 720p version to render.
