Asus M5A78L-M LX Plus, AMD FX 4300 & BIOS Update?

I know the BIOS of the board needs to be updated, of course, but I'm curious if I can pop the FX 4300 in and at least get to the BIOS so I can update it?

Would also want to know what the risks are of doing so?, dont want to short out the new board, cpu or other components.

As long as the current BIOS supports it, you can. Otherwise, you'll have to get a CPU it does support and then update it.

When I got mine, my FX6100 worked when I plugged it in. As long as you aren't buying an older revision (maybe a refurbished board or something), it should be fine with any AM3+ under 125W.

I use a Lenovo T440: i5 4300U, 8GB RAM, 128GB Samsung 840 Evo, 14" 900p display and an external 23" 1080p passive 3D monitor. Extended 6-cell battery with internal 3-cell. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (I only use open-source software -- haven't paid for a single program yet).
