More ram or faster ram?

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

would you happen to know if this ram www.ebay.ca/itm/IBM-64GB-Micron-IBM-DDR2-533-CL4-ECC-8GB-1GX72-Server-Memory-MT72HTS1G72MDY-/281291224254?pt=US_Memory_RAM_&hash=item417e4374be&_uhb=1 would work in a Dell precision 690? Very good point by the way, thanks.

According to the Dell website's specs, the RAM will work just fine. Same type and number (ECC 533 CL4).

Looks good!

EDIT- Any specific need for 64GB? Usually just 16GB is near-overkill. Maybe save some money, and get less? Unless that auction was just an example, and you're not actually getting 64GB.

Upgrading my Dell Precision 690 workstation. I mostly use it for video editing and making music in fl studio 11. I do occasionally play games on it like DayZ and minecraft. Right now I'm running on ddr2 ecc 2gb (4x 512mb) there are an additional 4 slots left in the system for memory (overall 8 memory slots) should I get four more sticks of 512mb ecc ram which has a higher speed or I am looking at getting 64GB of slower speed ram (8x 8gb) ? I would like to run a ramdisk on this if I get it. Would I see a performance upgrade with this or will it slow me down? Lots of questions (sorry) thanks for taking the time to read this.

I think more ram is more beneficial than faster ram, 2gb of ram really isnt very much for games or video editing, i normally recommend 8-16 even for normal video editing use and 4-8 for gaming at least

be careful these motherboards are insanely picky when supporting ram

also DDR2 is a bit expensive now

More RAM for sure if you are staying with your current system.  It might be time for a complete overhaul though.  DDR2???

Definitely more. Faster is good, but 8gb is always going to beat a fast 4gb.

It's going to be expensive. May be worth just getting a more powerful system.

If you want to stick another 2GB in though and it's not too much then just do that :P i dont know how you survive with just 2GB :P I just stuck another 8GB in my PC and i'm already using it up: Photoshop has been hogging about 10.5GB of it all day...

I'm interested in trying out making a ramdisk with the 64 gb. Maybe save some games or projects onto it to make it faster. :) thank you for all your help! I appreciate it a lot.

If it's at least 1600 mhz more ram will be better than faster ram.
