It gets easier to hate on Oculus with the latest story.

DeViLzzz

Bah, please, Palmer thinks he discovered the wheel. All his team did was make a viable head mounted display which works kinda-sorta well, and now he thinks that can change the way people interact in the way that we wouldn't want to interact IRL anymore. Our perception isn't only visual. And even if it was, if we totally disregard touch, heat and smells, you can never replace that with a display. Short of "hacking" into our optical nerves you can't replace our normal vision.

This kind of prepotency makes me hate on Palmer now... WTH was he thinking for saying that.

Palmer Luckey: ".. why do you need to actually go see people in real life ..." :o

I am actually a person who has been a shut in and has had huge anxiety issues and no even if I struggle in life to have quality relationship and am afraid seriously I never thought of saying hey I will just replace real life interaction with VR. Seriously wth?!?!?!

I know that feel, bro. I had SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder) years ago that's been cured because I want to change myself. Now, I'm just an introvert w/ a few true friends...

Its a philosophical question: If you can trick your brain into perceiving reality where there is none, what difference is it to you? Regardless of what you know, its what makes you most content, socially or economically that is most important. Thats what I believe Luckey is saying.

Exactly. OP needs to stop being a little girl.

If you're legitimately offended, maybe you should try to actually think about what he's saying instead of reading one line and then crying to the forums about it. I've seen how easily you get offended at harmless remarks; you can't even look past the surface of statements because that would show how irrational you are.

Saying "omg y would he say that so mean he doesnt understand me" is easy. It's more fulfilling to realize that Palmer isn't blatantly stating that we should replace all human interaction with VR. This is more than just what you would like to believe is an egotistical social takeover agenda. It's a genuine topic to think about.

"M. Aronnax." replied the Canadian, "your arguments are rotten at the foundation. You speak in the future, 'We shall be there! we shall be here!' I speak in the present, 'We are here, and we must profit by it.'"

Saves massive energy costs for those who want to see people far away.

Some people can't afford to travel either, so this could be perfect for them.

If we can plug into the matrix, then we could do anything.

Haters gonna hate. What he actually said was that if in the future we could simulate everything perfectly using VR (not only visual, but also touch, smell, etc) then it would make no sense to leave your home. For example, why go on a trip and waste time/gas/resources when you could just simulate it using VR. And just because Palmer said that doesn't mean it's going to happen, it is just his opinion in regards to a question he was asked. And we are really far away from this becoming a reality.

Is it sad to say that my only friends in life are those online. I have only heard their voices not their faces. All I do every day after work is come home play Planetside 2/Space Engineers. Look at the news, look at LinusTechTips Forum and all the other forums I frequent. Look for new wallpapers on 4Chan and watch Anime whenever a new ep of the season come sout. I have 11 shows fromt his season bookmarked to watch every time a new ep comes out. I also have a folder filled with films to watch. God dammit I love my life I hope I never get married or have kids because that will be the end of me. If you never here from me again it's because I got into a relationship with actual people.

Real life has the best graphic and best fps

Not really some of us have faulty hardware and require additional peripherals that get annoying or laser CNC machining on the hardware to correct the issues

Fucking thank you! It pisses me off to no end that everybody, up to and including Linus and Luke cannot stop sucking oculus dick long enough to realize this is a stupid fucking gimmick, it's no more revolutionary or game changing or whatever than something equally as stupid as 3D

It could be revolutionary and game changing. I hope it doesn't if Facebook will lead the revolution, but it's very possible.

I don't think it's a gimmick either. Virtual Reality is the obvious next step in gaming (and a lot of other things too like meetings etc). I for one can't wait for all the glorious VR porn.

I am calling it, Blowjob simulator 201X: Palmer edition will be game of the year when it is released.

It's very unfair to "hate" on Palmer about what he said here.

Palmer is clearly making a reasonable, philosophical argument about Reality vs Virtual Reality in this interview:

"How do I know you're real," Luckey said to the interviewer. "You're just standing there. You could be a hologram. "

(Premise) If you can perfectly simulate reality (ie: if there was no meaningful difference between VR and R),

(Question) then why would you need to go out to see people in R?

Honestly, the only way to argue against this question is to refute the premise that VR will never perfectly simulate R -- and dont forget, Palmer is talking hypothetically 10-20 years from now. So it's purely a thought experiment (ie, you cant factually disprove this premise).

No one knows the distant future of VR, but it's very interesting to think about. Not something to hate on. And if you spend some time honestly thinking about reality, you'll probably find it very hard to argue against Palmer here.

I've had more than a few university courses directly on this subject (epistemology and metaphysics), so I've done a fair amount of thinking about this subject myself.

Like I said... Vision and sound aren't the only senses humans use, don't get sucked in and your hopes up that this will be something more than a display strapped to your head with some 3d effects and head tracking. It's VERY IMMERSIVE, and a great thing. I can't wait to get my hands on one. But to be so bold and claim it can replace reality, please. This community should know better, I didn't expect the hype to go this far. Maybe it's time to step back and look at things from a different angle.

To join in on the parallel discussion, IMHO the only way you can simulate all of the senses is by a neural interface, and you should know how complex that is and how far away from that we accually are... I'm not takling 5-10 years here to the consumer version. In the end ask yourself this question: how many of you would let yourself be connected via a neural interface to something facebook owns and runs?

Who said anything about needing all senses though? In the interview Palmer actually talks about that exact issue you brought up. Not a lot of stuff though, you don't need smell or touch. When you have a meeting you don't generally rely on smell, and you don't go around touching people that often either.

For absolute immersion we will need something like a neural interface SAO style, but for a lot of stuff just hearing and vision is more than enough. A lot of the stuff is also very far into the future (several decades). Of course VR won't replace most things you do in reality by next year. It might replace a lot of them 15-20 years from now though.

It can be argued that reality can be verified and measured by other people or even machines, so in practice this means your perception can be altered but reality remains the same.

Why hate on him for that? I actually agree with him on this.

Why be in the real world if you could simulate the same or a better world?

If you couldn't understand the original post and the point I was making then don't comment. Seriously go back and read it and maybe you will fully understand what I said this time. It seemed some others who liked the post had no trouble at all understanding it. If you need me to explain it I don't mind.
