I had a client that wanted this as part of his budget for the HTPC I was building him.

This is the article that helped me the most, as I didn't have much knowledge about them. Not only do they recommend some interesting ones, they also tell you some of the amazing ways/choices you have in doing so. Even if you don't choose one that's featured on there, it will take you into the direction that you feel is best for your scenario:

If your TV supports CEC you can potentially control Plex / XBMC directly from your TV remote via HDMI. The catch is that most graphics cards don't support CEC. But you can get adapters such as this.

Alternatively you could get a universal remote such as the Logitech Harmony series and a cheap IR receiver for your HTPC.

Note: A quick search of your TV and CEC shows that it does indeed support it.

In case you can't figure out how to use your (or any other) remote, you might want to check out the official Plex app (I know there is one for Android, not sure about other platforms). The Plex app has a built-in remote which works through Wi-Fi if I'm not mistaken.

Another alternative could be a wireless mouse/keyboard such as the Logitech K400. I have one of those myself for my HTPC, and it works pretty well.

Hope this helps  :) .

Plex has remote apps for iOS and Windows Phone as well. There are 3rd party ones that have the same functionality too.
