Malware Discussion

Hey guys, I recently had a nasty run in with a suspicious torrent and thought I might start up a thread on here to see what kinds of scary stuff is out there. Any horror stories and general information on malware is welcome and appreciated. That torrent I mentioned earlier was like nothing I've seen before; it was a full file size (2GB or so) and ramped up my CPU usage and clock speed to max. Offline backups are the savior of my network on this one; ALWAYS HAVE ONE.

I didn't even give it enough time to report it before I pulled the plug since RealTempGT was reporting some hot temperatures (55 at idle and rose to 65 degrees in about 20 seconds or so).

My favorite Antivirus as well! Unfortunately I can't get it to work properly on my Windows 8.1 and there are no new torrented versions out there... I had to move on to the AVG Antivirus 2014 (paid version).

Anyway, on topic, once I saw a virus that can potentially delete all of your files on the primary HDD if you double click on the file (virus)... That s*it is crazy :o

PS: Torrenting was legal in the Netherlands where I live until 2 days ago. :D

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 - 3900x @ 4.4GHz with a Custom Loop | MBO: ASUS Crosshair VI Extreme | RAM: 4x4GB Apacer 2666MHz overclocked to 3933MHz with OCZ Reaper HPC Heatsinks | GPU: PowerColor Red Devil 6900XT | SSDs: Intel 660P 512GB SSD and Intel 660P 1TB SSD | HDD: 2x WD Black 6TB and Seagate Backup Plus 8TB External Drive | PSU: Corsair RM1000i | Case: Cooler Master C700P Black Edition | Build Log: here

Nope, I have the old 2013 early revision... Do you have a link for the new version?

Its on the website. Or you should try updating norton. It should work. If not, use your key and use that for the new norton 360.

I would think you got miner malware. It uses your system to mine bitcoins for someone else. Alternativley a Trojan could have been doing some sneaky stuff. I'm an avg volunteer, so I'm biased. I recommend AVG

Thanks for the info. Hopefully I won't run into any more of those. I used to use Norton 360 ,but I switched to AVG because Norton kept doing random checks in the background and alt tabbing me out of games to tell me.

AVG will automatically enable game mode. Which will stop it running unneeded tasks

I hope you mean illegal (Pirating) torrenting? Torrenting itself is just Peer to Peer file sharing and people just happen to use it to illegally distribute things

Yeah, I mean pirating. It was legal, however there was a law suit about that between the EU and the Netherlands, which lasted for a couple of years. Last week the European Court of Justice ruled against the state of Netherlands making pirating itself illegal. Before that once you buy a piece of mass storage (HDDs, SSDs,Phones, etc.) from a store, one had to pay 5-15 euros more to cover intellectual property losses from potential pirating.
