PSU indecision

Bowzaa
Go to solution Solved by Tea1337,

Your PSU no no where near maxed. And you would need 850w to 1000w if you were running 3-4way SLI. Even with the 280x toxic the 650 is more than enough

First off, specs!

Hiyo, fairly new here and trying to decide on a PSU (obviously).

I don't know much, but I look to expand my build later on and am looking at 850-1000W Power Supplies.

I currently have a Fractal Design Tesla R2 650W Gold (unsure if I have it maxed), and recently I just bought a Sapphire R9 280x Toxic and don't know what I require. I do plan to run the GPU at it's boost (my room is definitely cold enough) and have no idea what to look at. I also have my CPU overclocked and it's idle consumption is ~125 and load is ~135 if I remember correctly (tested like 4 months ago).

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

Dude, you could probably run that off a CX500M with the Toxic.

A 650W psu would be more than enough to power this system so I would recommend you to keep your current power supply.

All right so a PSU can wait till I grab a second one? I have just enough space for two dual-slot cards. Thanks :D

Yes a 750W will be a good choice in the future if you plan to do crossfire in the future.

All righty, thank you-thank you! Now I know I don't have to spend an extra $200 on a power supply right now! Awesome.

Well thanks everyone for the info, but I'm still curious; the cooler master calculator says ~685 for peak load with the 280x and my CPU OC. Is there anything that could cause that? Following is a screenshot of my settings for the calculator.

An inaccurate calculator and/or very heavy oc'ing would cause that.

Makes sense. I don't have a heavy OC, only 4400MHz from 4100MHz. Barely anything changed, really. Well in the end, this forum saved me $200 on something I wouldn't have needed. Thanks :D
