$400 = Which GPU ?

Dive5885

Hello Everyone!

This is my final post on finding a new GPU after my 7970 came DOA.

I Finally got my refund and yet I still can't decide on a card.

$400 is the max I'm willing to spend.

But less than $400 is also good.

SO!

Please feel free to elaborate!

Thanks!

I'd vote for the 770. It's a monster GPU and it outperformed my old 7970 by quite a bit. It's a decent upgrade, uses less power, tons of options and can be found under your budget.

If you want to stay with Radeon or go more bang for buck, as stated above, find a 290. 290 can eat a 770 up.

As you mentioned in your other posts, you could always go with older cards and SLI/Crossfire them, but I'd still recommend the single powerful video card over dual. I never had much of an issue with Crossfire, but there were a few games I had to disable crossfire on. So with the ease of use and the heat/power concerns, I still vote for 290 on the low or 770.

I found a lot of R9 290 cards any were from $300 - $400.

But they are used and I can bet that half of them were used or bitcoin and mining.

Which I guess puts stress on the card and works 24/7 ?

If you keep your eyes out, you might be able to find a deal like this. It's extremely rare to find such a deal, and I only picked it up because another forumer over on the EVGA forums picked up one from the same guy and it runs great. The deals are out there, you just have to find them.

I found a lot of deals for the R9 290/X but most of them were used for mining.

Which means I'm pretty sure they used the card to the max for some time.

in that case I think it will be a safer option to choose GTX770 over the AMD R9 290/X

I bought mine off a miner, just played BF4 for 4 hours and no problems. TBH mining doesn't take that much life off the card, I still have a EVGA GTX 470 that I have had oc'd by a lot (800 core, 1750 mem) since day 1 and it's still chugging along just fine. (It's what the 290x replaced).

If you can get a better card that's used. Bought my 290x off ebay for $425 and it looks and runs like new.

What about this? PowerColor TurboDuo R9 290 at 3400USD after rebate....

Reasons for recommending the R9 290 over the GTX770, more VRAM, wider memory bus and overall faster GPU.
