1080 120 HZ VS 1440p 60 hz

Juliogol

Hi guys!

As the title says I'm wondering about getting a 1080p 120mhz monitor for gaming. Primarily FPS online. My question is about what do you think is better. The extra resolution of a 1440p monitor or the extra refresh rate of the 1080p 120mhz monitor.

I currently own a 1440p monitor but I was wondering if I should sell it and get a 1080p one for the extra FPS.

Any suggestions?

u can always run on lower resolutions...it will give u more frequency at lower resolution...no need to sell the monitor...just select 1080p in the game menu and turn off v-sync.. :)

Definatley go with the 120hz, i have run games at 60hz and then at 120hz and there is a huge difference in my opinion and especially in FPS, like you said you are playing so hands down the 120hz for a FPS gamer. Also in a fast paced first person shooters your not really caring much about the resolution in my opinion, also its going to be harder on you graphics card to hold the fps at the higher res.

This monitor is a gsynch monitor and it going to be $800, which is crazy if you consider the panel is still a tn, so it would only be worth upgrading to that monitor if they switch it up to an ips.

to conclude get 120hz, NOT 1440p

Just get your self  a really nice 14440p ips screen and enjoy all that resolution instead of a nasty tn 120hz 1080p monitor

Thanks for all the answers... I am really considering the 120hz monitor...

This one is even at a really good price. Recently I bought a 3d LED TV and it was after using it for 5 minutes that I realized the difference with the 60mhz one. If monitor is the same, and conidering your answers it looks like it!

If possible i would suggest trying a 120 hz out if a friend has one or maybe an in-store demo to see if you can tell the difference. some people can some people cant. some people don't care for the difference. You should see if you can try it out for yourself and decide if you think its worth the loss of resolution.

IMO I would stick with the higher res. the quality drop isnt worth the extra refresh rate.

If his Graphics card can keep up with that and he wants to spend that much for it.

some TN panels are actually decent. depends on the quality of the manufacturer. but still 800 is too much for a monitor for myself either way.

Depends. If you're really serious about your gaming, them go for the 120 monitor, but if not, just go for the 1440p.

I'd personally stick with the 1440p, it's got more non-gaming benefits than the 120Hz and in an online FPS I think any sort of lag or stutter is more likely to be from internet connection than monitor refresh rate.

Also, to people saying 1440p is harder to run in terms of graphics cards, that's definitely the case if we're talking about 1080p at 60fps. But the whole point of getting a 120Hz monitor is to push the fps to such rates so I don't think it's that much easier on graphic cards.

This. There are a lot of those Korean 1440p monitors that can be overclocked.

The one I have it's a korean one. But have no idea how to overclock it... is it sure or can it damage it?

Look into this: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/31526-overclocking-your-monitor-refresh-rate-amd-gpus/

It depends on your monitor how far it can go and as far as I know you can't damage anything. Also, when you have overclocked it, look here to check if it isn't skipping any frames : http://www.testufo.com/#test=frameskipping

My personal rig: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/139780-zalman-my-first-build/

I use it partially as a Hackintosh. Don't judge me.

I remember my friend talking to me, saying he wanted a 144Hz monitor to help with competition. He also mentioned how every pro on the best Aussie TF2 team has at minimum a 120Hz monitor.

There was another guy who said he wanted a 144Hz monitor because it helps greatly with shotgun tracking (again, in TF2).

1440p has the benefit of looking nicer with more pixels, but at 60Hz, it might restrict competitive ability.

It's up to what you do. Are you competitive or do you play for fun? If you're competitive, 144Hz all the way, if not, 1440p all the way.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

That's like saying most of the weight in a race car is from the engine, so don't reduce weight elsewhere. If performance didn't matter, we wouldn't be getting optimized drivers as often. #144HzMasterRace

I've been gaming on console my whole life and I found 60Hz mind blowing. I don't think 120Hz will ever matter for me. I'd rather have the resolution.

get 1440p because its hard to see more that 60hz anyway

No it's not. I have a 60hz monitor and a 144hz monitor in front of me. You can tell at a glance which is which just from moving the mouse cursor. The difference between 60 fps @ 60hz & 144 fps @ 144hz in a fast-paced game like most first person shooters is simply night and day.

Anyone who says you can't see the difference has never used a 120hz monitor with a system that could push 120 fps.

I have an X-star DP2710 and it is OCed to 115 Hz. I have the best of both worlds.

Depends on your GPU. If you can get at least 40 FPS on both with your average games (Not Crysis 3...), I'd go with the 1440p display.
