[Build Log? Post? Summary?] First Build H440

Guest

So here it is; after a week of work, the pictures are finally done. I am very sorry for the low quality of the Nexus 5 pictures, because they're the best I can manage without my dad's D7000, which he won't let me use.

I present to you...erm...wait a sec...ah! I'll call it "Remnants" for the OEM parts that I'm using from the Dell. I had and still have an XPS 8500 that is functioning as my mom's work computer, with all the parts that I'm not using in this build. The lateness was due to the fact that I had to order a new CPU last second because all of a sudden my mom wanted the 3770 that I was going to re-use. It's really nothing special, no custom loops and SLI 780 Tis, it's just my first build and I'm rather proud of the cable management that I spent more than 2 hours on.

CPU: Intel E3-1230V2 3.3-3.7GHz, LGA1155. I picked this CPU because I couldn't resist the temptation of having a Xeon sticker on my build. lol jk. It is extremely good for the price (3770 perf for just $240) and I'm after the reliability.

MOBO: Asrock Z77 Extreme3. I didn't intend on buying a LGA1155 board when LGA1150 has been out for 6 months. I picked this board because originally I was going to reuse the 3770 and I wanted something larger, better and more reliable than the shitty Dell OJYPT1, H77, mATX board (that I could use as a backup board). Then my mom gypsed me of my 3770, but it didn't matter because the E3-1230V2 was the perfect choice.

RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1600 11-11-11-28. Nothing special. I broke up the 12GB kit that came with the Dell into 2x4GB and 2x2GB, gave the 4GB kit to my mom, and used the 8GB myself. They show up as Hyundai in CPU-Z; Hyundai was merged with SK, so the NAND itself says manufactured by SK Hynix. Can't complain, Hynix is good. Same indescribable weird color as the GPU, maybe I'm just color deficient.

COOLER: Noctua NH-U9B. Let's just say I got so pissed waiting for the H440 that I thought I was going to get a 450D, which would require a lower-profile tower like the U9B. I didn't, but it doesn't matter because it oozes quality, looks pretty good in my opinion, and keeps my 1230V2 under 60°C in F@H.

SSD + HDD: Intel SSD 530 240GB. I got this SSD back in January and it's really good; I'm not that picky about storage so I dig its trusty SF-2281, IMFT NAND, sexy Intel design and 5-year warranty. I'm also running a 10-year-old SATA1.5 WD Caviar 200GB drive; it's from my super old Socket 475 Gateway and it still works for incompressible data that my SSD would want to hold at an arms' length.

GPU: GT 640 OEM GDDR5. I've explained this a million times; it's not the retail DDR3 version and it's not the retail DDR5 version. It's a full GK107, with 128-bit GDDR5 5GHz like the GTX 650, albeit at slightly slower core clock. You can find it on geforce.com under GT 640 OEM and the GDDR5 version. I don't really feel a need to upgrade at the moment; I only play BF2:PR and BF3, and at good settings BF3 runs at 60-80fps. Funny how Project Reality runs at a slightly lower fps than BF3, but oh well. Plus I really like the color of the PCB on it: it's not really Sapphire's bright blue but it's not really OEM green either, it's a beautiful thing.

PSU: XFX Core Edition 550W (refreshed as TS550). Nothing much, it's just a PSU. Seasonic S12II based. 80+ Bronze.

CASE: NZXT H440. It's a sexy beast and you can clearly see for youself. 'Nuff said.

Really nice build!

But that brown PCB...

I find having a brown PCB allows you to constantly think of chocolate pudding. At least that's what images my motherboard gives me. :D

A very odd setup, but that's what makes it great! Glad to see a non-mainstream build

Yea that's what I realized after I bought everything: Noctuas usually look terrible but with the Asrock mobo and everything, it looks pretty at home in there if you ask me.

Chocolate pudding lol

  • 3 weeks later...

why did you put the gpu in the lower slot?

Sorry, i didn't notice anyone posted.

The first one won't fit my GT 640. The bracket refuses to comply with the case. Either that or Asrock filled the slot with invisible gunk.
