Turning an xbox or play station into a PC?

Shd0w2

Has anyone tried wiping the os on either and ran windows or Linux? Always wondered about this...

They are not x86, well the 360 and PS3 are not. So, there is basically 0 chance that a desktop OS will run on them I am pretty sure.

It's possible?

ummm.I know they are similar but yet they are still different. I think you would have to write alot of the drivers and programs just to get something like windows or linux working.

What about an xb1 or ps4

it was possible at  one point in time on the ps3 (feature was removed as it was exploitable) but not on anything else. This includes the ps4 and xbox one.

If it was a PC, I wonder how fast it wouldn't even be that fast.... Doesn't the software on the consoles take advantage of that one architecture? Making them a PC would make them significantly weaker (if that was possible)

With the PS3, you used to be able to install a special distro on it, but Sony later removed that feature due to "Security flaws"

Remember when the Sony Entertainment Network got hacked? It was an outburst from that.

As for the Xbox One and the PS4, I'm sure someone is probably working on it.

Compatible with Windows 95

Possibly. I don't know about drivers tho. Not saying you cant get it too boot, but actually work as a normal PC, I don't think so.

Or, according to dude above me, might be possible I guess.

It was not an outburst from that lol! The hack was someone/group got into psn servers and stole a bunch of data so they shut them down until they could ensure no more security flaws in the servers. The "other os" feature was removed due to exploits that allowed people to play downloaded versions of games (aka pirated) and thus unrelated.

Sony removed support for other OS's in v3.2.1 --> George Hotz gets pissed  -->  PS3 Jailbreak team gets pissed --> fail0verflow gets pissed --> fail0verflow hacks PSN, steals a bunch of data -->  George Hotz Hacks PS3 Systems  -->  PS3 Jailbreak team successfully hacks PS3 systems in order to install Pirated software --> Software v3.41 released and nothing happens, tumbleweed rolls by.

That was my recollection of events, anyway.

Windows would not run on PowerPC or Cell. Linux would probably.

As stated previously, Linux is possible on a PS3, but the major requirement is that the firmware to be pre 3.55 I think, it's possible to flash the ROM to whatever you want but tools such as these are not cheap and are not worth it, the only alternative is using the actual shell of the consoles with a MITX board or a NUC board really..

Simple enough to continue spoofing even after the major firmware update, the only thing Sony achieved by doing this was purging the numbers of Jailbroken systems (Mine included, though I still have an old but stable MW2 patch), people with patience waited around and spoofed their way through the update, though many people were still being detected.

Actually you can probably fit a modern mITX system in there (specially the first fat versions released) and maybe even a 750ti with a pci-e raiser cable. I'd be a nice project

there was a early virsion of PS3 that had linux support for computing applications but they dont have that any more.

other than that there is not chance of running a openly available OS on a console

mostly because of the difference in the CPU instructions and architecture. there are no drivers available for the hardware. only thing that i can come up is running a mac OS version from the old PowerPC CPU days with modified drivers even that is a huge stretch.

but if its xbox one that you are talking about its does run a version of windows kernel on it alongside the xbox kernal on top of its own VMs so its a very complicated system.

at the end of the day you are better off building or buying a very cheap system with all the same components used in these new generation consoles and running what ever OS that you want

@Misanthrope

Exactly what i was thinking and i would go Fm2+ for price to performance and a 750ti would do great because its maxwell so low power consumption with an apu and a nice ssd and it would be great and portable :)
