Split Steam across drives?

Jedicake

Not really sure if this is the right forum topic!

I'm wanting to put just a few Steam games on my SSD(s).... How difficult of a process (or if it's even possible) is it to have Steam on 2 separate drives.. Can I just copy/paste..? or..

Ummm You can create steam library's on more than one drive. You cant copy/paste them though.

Best way is to 'backup' the games you want to move, then when you restore it select the other drive.

Steam > settings > Downloads > content liabries > add a new library folder. That should work. You should be able to copy them and move them into the newly selected folder, steam may have to repair install but it should recognize the files are there. I have dragged and dropped games before and it work so I assume copy and paste will work.

I was just about to recommend this. Only thing I would change is I personally don't feel comfortable copy/pasting game files to different drive locations. If internet is fast enough I recommend redownloading the games to the specific drive you want.

After you set up a new library folder on a different drive when you go to install a game it will ask you specifically which drive folder you want it to.

No. Just create another library, copy/paste and then update the game. There is no risk and it's faster than downloading. I've done it plenty times.

Actually, it's not difficult at all.

Move the game from steamapps to anywhere else, then use a symbolic link to connect them. Or use Steam's built in settings as above.

Suppose you copy the content of C:\blah\blah\Steamapps\Nerdville to D:\AltSteamPlace\Steamapps\Nerdville.

Does Steam maintain "directory" information about Nerdville external to the Nerdville directory?

How does one tell Steam about the new location?

Access D:\AltSteamPlace\Steamapps\Nerdville (via File Explorer), figure out which exe is the "launch exe", start the game by double clicking the launch exe?  Will this connect to Steam, and possibly initiate a repair process?

Once the game runs from D:\AltSteamPlace\Steamapps\Nerdville, just delete the C:\blah\blah\Steamapps\Nerdville folder?

Actually you can, you just have to set up alternate install locations, then select the one you wish to install the game to.

that is handled well by steam. steam will recognized all games copied as long as the folder hierarchy is maintained. you just tell steam in the option about the second directory, and steam will list out both for you to select when downloading the game. for the game you copied it should run from the new library you copied but i dont know what will happen if both games are in both directory i have never tried that. if I'm not mistaken steam has an option to select which one will be the default library so it probably will try to run from the default directory in such cases.

Yea I do it. WHen Steam asks you where you want to install your games to you just install them on your SSD not you HDD. The folder will be called Steam Library 2 or something. It actually works better then having the games in the Steam folder itself ebcause you don't have to go through so many folders to get to the game folders.

There are ways to move the files of the games to and from different directories, can't remember how atm, a quick google search should do the job ;)
