I have tried EVERYTHING!!....

My specs:

Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP Motherboard

GTX 760 GPU

i5 4670k @3.40 GhZ

8GB of DDR3 RAM

1TB Solid state hybrid drive

Running Windows 8.1 64 bit

Corsair TX 650 PSU

OK, so I just built my gaming PC with the help of my rather experienced friend and about one month into having it, I would experience freezes every few hours with no clear reason. The problem would be very inconsistent with timing as well, it could happen every 7 hours, or 7 minutes. I looked at my files to make sure everything looked good, and it was ok. When the problem still happened, I figured it was a software problem and I wiped my computer. This did not fix it and it continued to freeze, even in bios. Next, thinking it was a motherboard problem, I spent 4 hours on the phone with Gigabyte trying to diagnose the problem,I sent it in, and 3 week later I got back a new motherboard and the problem continued. I even tried a NEW motherboard after that one, and it still froze. Next, I check my CPU socket and pins, it looked fine. My temps were a little high so I tried more and a better brand of thermal paste AND replaced the CPU cooler. It still froze. Then, one at a time, trying to isolate the problem, I swapped out my PSU, RAM, GPU, CPU, and Hard Drive. Still, it kept freezing. I was totally stumped on the problem. Thinking it could be a messed up polarity, I disconnected all the non-essential ones. It still did it. Thinking the case could be shorting it out, I ran it on a test bench. It still froze. I switched RAM and RAM slots to no avail. I made sure that my RAM was compatible with my Motherboard. I switched SATA cables as well. I cleaned my components of dust, switched outlets, and power cables as well. I have tried 3 different monitors as well. I tried a higher wattage PSU, and same problem. I have reset the BIOS, cleared the CMOS, checked for the latest CPU, GPU, and BIOS drivers and updates, as well as windows updates. I have no idea what to do now. It has been almost a month and a half and I have taken the computer apart at least 10 times. What am I missing? What could it be? Could it be 2 problems? Please help.

You sure you have all the latest drivers? Also what speed is that ram at?

My RAM is @ 1600 MHZ. Also, I don't think that it is compatibility only because it worked like a dream for the first month of use. I could check to see if raising the vcore will help, but I have all the power settings on normal or performance settings. As for drivers, yes, I believe I have them all. I ended up throwing in the towel and giving it to the head of AV/IT at my High school, I'm sure he will be able to figure it out.

no I don't think it's heat because I have replaced my fan headers, CPU Coolers, Thermal compound, and checked my temps. Also, It does not freeze under stress necessarily, it is totally random. Also, I have tried with different DVI and HDMI cables as well as VGA.

Yow swapped out the gpu, did you swap it out for the same brand like Nvida/AMD? I know crashing drivers can cause stuff like this.

awesome idea, try a fresh install of maybe windows 7 just to see what happens, try it with no GPU if you have onboard/ try with a single stick of RAM you have tried pretty much everything else otherwise , maybe try a different drive entirely.

clear the CMOS and boot into safe mode, see if it happens then.

Resetting CMOS is different for every motherboard manufacterer, check your mobo manual to find out how.

as I said I already reset and cleared the CMOS AND I booted into safe mode. Also I did do a fresh re install of windows. I am thinking that it is the Keyboard and mouse that is causing it, I have heard of that doing similar things before.

I remember this problem from the good old days of PS/2 connectors, the pc would just freeze when you plugged the mouse

  • 3 weeks later...

i know there is a very small chance of this but looking at what you have tried it looks like your cpu is dead i mean you replace everything BUT the cpu so it looks like the badguy here so i would recomend getting a realy cheap pentium or something and try it with that

edit: sorry just re-read the OP and yeah you did replace the cpu so i think you just have one of the trouble computers that will give troubles no matter what (my dad also had this but windows 7 cinda fixed it :P) but the last this i would try is use every induvidual component in a diferent computer

If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough it will be believed.
