Good dogfighting games?

speciealpha

I loved playing aerial dogfighting games when I was younger and want to get back into the genre. Anyone got any suggestions? The only one I know of is War Thunder because of Robbaz videos :P

Hawx was fun.
Ace Combat Assault Horizon looks good, seen it on steam a few times for sales.
War Thunder (its F2P)

SkyDrift (is more arcade, basically a little Mario karty but planes, I know not dogfighting specially but you might like it.)

If you are patient or have a time machine, Star Citizen.

Basically there are two types; arcade and simulator. Simulator is far more complicated but more rewarding when you get something done.

Simulators: Digital Combat Simulator: Flaming Cliffs (absolutely awesome), Digital Combat Simulator P-51, IL-2 Ilyushin Series, MS Combat series (V old I think).

Arcade: Ace Combat, H.A.W.X., War Thunder.

Seriously, in DCS you will need to switch on your RADAR, select a target, wait for missile range, wait for maximum evasive missile range, fire missile all while you will probably never actually see the opposite aircraft. It's a true simulator and not everyones cup of tea

EDIT: BF3 & BF4's air combat is a joke, avoid.

I have a lot of fun in Warthunder with this, and you can choose simple or more realistic flight models to suit your skill level.  One of the best I have seen recently.

Falcon BMS is by far the best for dogfighting!! and its free!

DCS has an excellent A10C  model, but that is not a dogfighter. DCS flaming cliffs does not use the most accurate flight models.. its more of an entry level sim. Which can be fun sometimes, but you can definitely tell its not accurate.

although if you're looking for arcade games then neither of these will be for you hehe.

  • 3 weeks later...

WarThunder its Free to Play so you can try it and it really is well done. I prefer realistic for better physics models of the planes and no target assist so you really do have to learn the lead time of your bullet travel and curve. And it is will be releasing Tanks soon, currently in CBT and its pretty cool to switch between plane/tank battle in same game.

We can build it, we have the technology!

If you have played Ace Combat series before, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon might be "meh" for you... that's what I find out... kind of disappointed. But those that new to Ace Combat series seems to enjoy it. But I still prefer AC:AH better compared to HAWX.

HAWX is kind of OK but I don't like the control mechanics. It doesn't have the right feel for me...

If you are more into light simulation, DCS: Flaming Cliffs 3 is the way to go... been enjoying that now and then... or you prefer heavy/steep learning curve sim? Falcon BMS is the answer...

Or wait for Star Citizen's Dogfighting. though that's in space.
