Is a Core 2 Duo E8400 @3.00 GHz ready for ARMA 3?

Go to solution Solved by FireFox,

I wish I could overlcock my cpu, but my motherboard is from Dell which means the bios is locked, limiting me to stock speeds. I really don't want to downgrade to a previous generation cpu, I would like to stick with my 45nm architecture, 6mb L2 cache, 65w tdp, and 1333 fsb.

Then what I'd probably do is get a Yorkfield (basically two 45nm Wolfdale dies on a single substrate, just like the older Kentsfield was a pair of 65nm Conroe dies) like a Q8200 for example but that is 2.33GHz and 4MB L2 cache, there is also a Q8400 which is 2.66GHz.

Also the Q6600 is an older gen but I'd imagine it'll perform better than the dual core, you still have two extra cores and an extra 2MB L2 cache

I've just found a Core 2 Quad Q9500 which has 6MB L2 cache and 2.83GHz but I have no idea on the cost, also no idea whether it's actually worth doing but if I was sensible then I'd probably just use it as it is for a while and save up for a more modern machine, even if it's a 1st generation Core i series, those are still good CPU's but if you want to keep the 65w TDP then you could have a look at an E8600 which is your CPU but clocked at 3.33GHz.

If you could find one pretty cheap then you could consider the Q9650, 3.0GHz and 12MB L2 cache but once again I have no idea on the price of those and because it's pretty old hardware now I'd imagine they are quite expensive, especially the higher end chips.

I was wondering if I need to upgrade my CPU and GPU in order to play ARMA 3 when it is released. I really want to hold off on an upgrade until the new Haswell-E chips come out next year, so I was hoping that i could continue using my current system until then. I want to know if I could mantain 50-60 fps constant on low-med settings at 1440x900. If anyone has any experience in the ARMA 3 alpha please let me know how your system performs, and tell me what you think.

I would think you probably do but it might run just at poor fps

I think you'll be fine, if the GTX 465 (can't remember ever seeing one of those, you sure it's not a GTX 460) isn't bottlenecked by the CPU then you should be OK but if you have a good aftermarket cooler then you could overclock the Core 2 Duo a little which may help.

I'm no expert so don't take my word as fact but I think you'll be fine mate.

Just had a look at your chipset in 'COMPATIBLE PRODUCTS' on the second to bottom left of the column and it looks like you could upgrade to a Core 2 Quad, if that was my computer I think thats the direction I'd go down.

I've seen Core 2 Quad Q6600's going pretty cheap online, my bro has had one overclocked to 3.2GHz for the last 5 years and even though it's getting old (along with the BFG Tech GTX 260) it's still pretty competant in games.

The GTX 465 is a half step above the GTX 460, it has a few more CUDA cores and is a little less efficient, it is equivilent in performance to a GTX 560 or a GTX 650 ti boost. Currently in ARMA II, I mantain 60-75 fps on max settings while there is little to no combat, but when there are many explosions and gunfire, that goes down to 45-55 fps.

Still pretty good FPS, I've also seen those Wolfdale chips hitting over 4.0GHz, if you're confident at overclocking then it might slightly better your gameplay.

I wasn't hoping to really spend any more money; unless it's on a motherboard, and even then I need to reinstall windows which I havn't done in 5 years.

ARMA 3 actually runs quite well on my 5GHz 6350. Still running my 465, and it plays on ultra at 35-45 fps. I think my E8400 would have done just fine.
