HELIOS: Old School is Still Cool

I decided to resurrect Apollo, but this is a whole new build (even with a different name). Now it's HELIOS. I'll only be able to do this rig on the weekends, but I'll probably update it on Sunday or Monday. Hopefully nothing will go wrong this time. I'll give you a little teaser.

 

But first, the specs of this beast (will get updated periodically):

• Intel Pentium III "Katamai" 500MHz, 512KB cache, slot 1
• 256MB PC100 RAM (2x128MB)

I needed to replace the thermal paste on the CPU badly, since it had never been changed before in the life of the CPU, and it ran REALLY hot.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I love this stuff. Cheap, and it actually does pretty damn well.

 

It looks like I used a TON, but I actually didn't. Just the perspective of the picture.

Some D-Link 10/100 Ethernet card

 

 

 

 

 

This is my precious 3dfx VooDoo3 3000 16MB AGP 2X card. I love this thing.

This is an Intel WS440BX mobo, and even though it supports up to 384MB of RAM on the spec sheet, I've pushed it to almost 1GB without any hiccups.

 

 

Those USB 1.1 ports, tho.

AGP 2X slot, 5 legacy PCI, and 1 ISA.

 

Noisy 50mm fan, which I plan on replacing with something near silent.

 

HUUUUUUUGGEEEE 200 watt PSU.

Finally getting it in the case. Had to use my terrible old PSU, since the other one doesn't fit.

 

It was hard taking pictures with it on my lap. Forgive me.

 

Got the front panel connectors on. Sadly, I had to use the HDD indicator LED as a power LED, since there wasn't room for the power LED connector.

I'm waiting to get a floppy drive and an optical drive. I did get my NZXT Sentry Mix 2 in and all wired up.

 

Cable management. Not bad for everything in there. I'll have to add another molex cable so I can use the optical drive when I get one.

UPDATE 5

 

This is a small update, but it is progress. I did my best to tuck away some of the cables. All that is left is to get an optical drive, floppy drive, and round IDE/floppy cables, then HELIOS is done.

 

I should get a side panel fan, but I don't have the money to spend and get a new one.

UPDATE 6

 

I decided to throw HELIOS in my 300R for right now, since the case is taking up too much room at my house, and HELIOS looks good in it.

I swapped the front fans out with stock fans from an Air 540 since they're quieter, and I cleaned up the cables more since then.

lol I just tried to think of nice names for it and this came to mind (mainly becuase alpenwasser's build inspired it). I don't think he'll mind.

It's one of the nicer ones (not as nice as the ones my dad has). It's my "test rig" monitor, and sometimes I use it with my netbook. The picture on it is actually really good.

Yes. A slot CPU. It was actually my main PC 4 or so years ago until Windows got screwed up. Then I got my trusty netbook maybe a year or so after that.

I like this mobo. "384MB max memory." HA. I've taken it to about a gig without any issues.

On a build note, I found the HDD I'm going to use for it (and I already have it, which is really nice).
