If Steam didn't exist, would you still be a PC gamer?

DoubleY

Realistically thinking, without steam I probably wouldn't be here, as it changed my life so much. My life would've been significantly different and perhaps I would still be a console peasant or worse; be like majority of my home village's teens (a**holes, being rebels and not giving a s*** about anything).

Steam was one of the reasons I switched to PC: it got me not only more to PC gaming, but also to PC tech. But if Steam suddenly ceased to exist right now, then I probably would still be a PC gamer.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

Steam sales are the only reason i have my pc besides the internet or else in my opinion pc would be just as or more expensive than a console.

Why not Steam is just a platform and PC gaming exsisted long before it, though there were considerably more headaches, ones from thinking hard and long fixing things and ones from bashing your head into the desk since a certain vital part of a game was completely until the next patch which has a release date of soon.

Life without Steam or other digital distributions? I'd just get my games on disc.

I would just buy my games from stores like I used to. Don't see anything changing on that part.

Of course I would, I like steam but it is not the be and and end all of PC Gaming - I still have a cupboard full of PC games that came on these round shiny things called DVDs and we installed them without Steam

Honestly although steam is a great store and has really great services it really has no bearing on what I play, why I play it or what I play it with

Seeing as only 2 months ago I started using steam I find this question moot.

PC gaming is the only real gaming. Everything else is filthy casualism. :)

This question sounds like you haven't been around when there wasn't Steam. I was pc gamer before Steam was really a thing. Actually for lond time only Steam game in the house was CS1.6 (bought on disc) and because it used Steam&VAC which both were rubbish, we used it (pre-2005). I made my own Steam account in 2008 because I wanted to buy TF2, not Orange box. I still buy the premier games on disc so it doesn't matter if dl services would die.

I was a pc gamer long before steam so i would be a pc gamer regardless.

But i would still have been a pirate. And game devs would not have been making any money off me.

If Steam didn't exist then there would be a fallout from it and I would have to see what would happen from there.  I think though that someone would step in and take over Steam before it would get to the point where it didn't exist and make good use of it .... hopefully ... for the sake of gamers.

Also to be honest I would have a huge back log of games to play on pc that I could play without Steam so yes I would still pc game.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

To an extent. I wouldn't have as many games but I as playing PC games before steam so I would still even if steam never came along. I would be a hard box consumer though as I don't really trust download systems outside of steam and origin.

I doubt it; maybe some casual Warcraft III but that's it (that game literally raised me up. Nearly 10+ years playing and I still play it).

I would definitely be playing on a PS4 if Steam didn't exist.

Hands are perfect cupholders.

I was a PC gamer before Steam.  Used to have a lovely shelf of boxes back in the 90s.  Almost miss them in a way.

Only damn problem was it was hard for the little man to get established.  Also hard as hell to know what was on the market.  Steam has made it easier, but Steam is not what made PC gaming.

In the early 2000s there was a lot of doomsday talk about how PC gaming is dying and that consoles are the future etc... it was almost accepted as an inevitability in many circles.

Steam seems to have reversed that. Now people still talk about how the overall PC industry is declining, but you will no longer find any credible source who can say that PC gaming is on the wane.
