Work out how much you spent on Consoles/Games (Last Gneration)

Puddleuk

This topic is just something I've wanted to work out and share. Basically I have worked out an estimated cost of what I spent last generation replacing consoles, buying games and renewing memberships. Here goes:

Quick note: I'm only including consoles which have been upgraded/replaced over the generation, thus costing me more money. In this regard the Wii is safe since I still have my original model :)

Consoles

First Xbox 360 console purchased in 2007 for £279.99 from Argos. That console broke in 2008. I moved to PS3 and spent £299.99 from GAME. In 2009 I bought a cheap Xbox Arcade for £30 (No cables). In 2010 this console broke. In 2010 I bought a new Xbox 360 from Amazon for £169.99. Later in 2012 I spent £90 on a second hand Xbox 360 Slim. In 2013 I bought a PS3 Slim for £100.

Memberships

Throughout the life of the Xbox 360 I likely spent £40-60 a year on Xbox LIVE Gold. I estimate I have bought 5 years worth at a rough cost of £200.

Total

Total Spend on Xbox 360 consoles: £569.98 + £200 XBLG = £769.98 excluding games.

Total Spend on PS3 Consoles: £399.99 excluding games

Grand total: £969.97

Games

I'm not going to total up the cost of every game over the years but I've easily owned 200 games. Some are launch titles, others were cheap, but I think a good estimate is £1000 at least. Probably closer to £2000 but trade ins reduced the loss.

Total Estimate Spend: £1969.97 over 7 years!

I know not a lot of you would have owned a console last generation but if you have, just for fun work out what you have spent on replacements, repairs, memberships and other misc costs. :)

You could get 2 systems, one every 3-4 years and still spend less than that cash, bearing in mind that the resale value of older high end gpus is better than that of a console

$258+ tax for two used Xbox 360 consoles
$199+ tax for one PS3
$??? one Wii (bought way after initial launch)

In regards to the games I bought loads of used ones pretty cheap but have bought some titles new but still usually not at launch.  It is hard to say what I spent on games. I have over 100 console games including Wii games but I sold the console and got the Wii U.  I did good getting $120 or more at the time I sold the Wii used so some recouping of $$$ there.

Hmmm games could have cost me $1200+ tax but I often did good trade in deals at FS when that was a hot thing to do and made money doing that and got quite a few new titles free so eh I don't know.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

Way too much. I've had at least one of each of the 3 360 models (currently have the E), one of each of the 3 PS3 models (currently have the Super Slim), two Wiis (currently have neither), and quite a few games spread across the years.

If you guys think that 360 and PS3 games are expensive, then better not look at the prices for some of the more sought after Neo Geo and PC Engine titles. The last four Neo games that I personally bought since late 2011 were around $615 each and they probably shot up in value already since they were released in very limited numbers and have been sold out for a while now.

Having too many cheap games available at once almost made me lose interest in gaming as a whole. Deleted my romsets and started buying up real games again and couldn't be happier. I don't even look at humble bundles or Steam sales. I also don't care one bit about online gaming.

I don't really play many games for gameplay anymore honestly. I play most games just for the graphics.

I usually spent about 5 to 10$ on a game last gen. The games I bought new were Sonic Color, Generations and mw3. Note those are disk based.

  • 2 weeks later...

Oof, this brings back memories... Let's see:

I bought my PS3 about a week after launch. I got the 60GB version that's capable of playing PS2 games. That cost me around £425. That system lasted me a good five years before it got YLOD while I was playing Portal 2... :( I got the 320GB slim version after that, which cost £230. So that's £655 on consoles alone.

I bought quite a few peripherals for it. I got three extra controllers, one at £25 and the other 2 at £35. I got a Playstation Eye camera with Eyepet, which was £40. I got singstar wireless microphones which were £20.

Games is the tricky one. I think I've owned about 45 games for it over the time I've had it. Half of them were bought at launch and the other half were used. So let's say the average price for the used games was £8. So that's 25 games at £8 = £200, and 20 at £40 = £800...... Ouch.

So let's add that all up! It totals to £1770. Wow.

For comparison, I have a PC now that I play games on. It cost £1100 to build, complete with peripherals. I have 80 games for it that I haven't spent more than £100 on. So that's at the most £1200 I've spent on PC gaming so far. Which one was worth it the most? Definitely the PC :)

I spent about 200 bucks on the xbox 360 console itself. + a few controllers

And i own about 70-80 games. Worst case scenario those games cost about 60$ each

So let's say 80 games + the console = 5000?...

Winner!

I've probably spent well over 2 grand between my 360 and ps3 last gen and that being very very conservative lol

yes, you can, but upgrading a rig that is a few generations behind is kinda pointless.. lets say you have an x58 motherboard with an i7 920 (kinda equals to a 4770k in terms of MSRP), you are not gonna want to change just the gfx card or ram.. you'll want a new system as a whole..

I disagree I still have my first core 2 duo build and just kept upgrading i have about 300 in upgrades its got a gtx 560 and 8 gigs of ram it plays all the games i want it to and i have my new rig for crysis and what not :) my c2d plays crysis 1&2 on med settings just saying (now I agree if you want to max everything out or play on high all the time youd need to do a new build )

i also have a laptop that plays most dos games maxed out..

a c2d might have been a superb rig when it came out, but now it without any doubt is not..   we were talking about having a computer that lasts as THE rig for 7-8 years like a console...

again it doesent matter what settings or fps does it run at as long as it plays new games at the same resolution and fps as it does the new ones... hell newer games for last gen consoles look and perform better than the first ones did...

if you had $1900 to spend over the 8 year period, would you rather build a top notch rig or buy a console (or more) over the lifespan of the generation? id go with a console as it has a much longer life...

i have a rig that my father build 9 yrs ago for around 1500€ and the thing it runs now is Red Hat linux server for hosting gameservers for me and my buds
