Questions regarding custom length PSU cables and sleeving.

Hi LTT.

I'm about to some custom heatshrinkless sleeving for my main rig and NAS but I do have some questions before I start to order. I'm not sure whether you need this information or not but my main rig has the Corsair TX650V2 and my NAS has the SilverStone ST45SF-G.

I'll most likely order from MDPC as I've only heard good about them but I've also been looking at Lutro0 Customs, which raised even more questions. The sleeve will be ordered from MDPC, my questions are really more about the wires and tools.

Obviously the Corsair PSU is a non-modular PSU, so do I want to make custom length cables longer than the stock cables I'll have to solder some new cables to the PSU itself. MDPC doesn't sell any wire so I headed straight for Lutro0 to see what he has and he has a few options. Which is the one to get for my Corsair and SilverStone PSU? As far as I can see from the 6-pin PCI-E connector from the SilveStone PSU it uses 18AWG cables.

Now that the wire type is sorted out I need a tool to crimp the contacts on. Will the MDPC Crimping-tool do the job no matter what wire type I end up buying, or should I order a die replacement with the wires?

I tried to calculate how much sleeving I'd need for the whole SilverStone job.

Shopping cart for NAS:

  • 1x Heatshrink SATA - ANTHRACITE 3,19 Euro
  • 1x Pin-Remover by MOLEX - The Original 16,54 Euro
  • 2x Sleeve SMALL - BLACK 14,28 Euro
  • 1x MDPC Crimping-Tool - 6th Anniversary 39,15 Euro

TL;DR: Questions about wires and cables.

  1. What wire type should I use for my Corsair and SilverStone PSU? http://lutro0-customs.com/collections/custom-wire
  2. Depending on the choice of wire, do I need a die replacement or is the MDPC Crimping-tool good enough as it is.

16AWG wire will be much better when making custom cables, even if its a non-modular. The MDPC crimping tool will work great for crimping, if you understand how to crimp and what to look for when crimping, you do not need the die replacement but if you are new to this, then it would not hurt to get the die replacement as it pretty much takes the guess work out of the equation .

At a random guess for the Corsair 650W non-modular PSU I would say the amount you would need is right around 130 feet give or take if you plan to sleeve every wire there is, but because of trial and error I recommend at least getting more say like 170 feet just encase you mess up.

This will be my the first time sleeving, so guess I should consider the die replacement.

As far as I can see the 18AWG has a thinner diameter than the 16AWG and Lutro0 mentions that the 18AWG is more easy to work with for a heatshrink job. The question is, is there any difference between the 16AWG and 18AWG regarding heatshrinkless sleeving?

I've calculated on what I need for the Corsair PSU as well, only the cables I'm using and intend to use. As I did with the NAS calculation I've added 10% for trail and error.

Heatshrinkless No, I personally find that 16AWG works great with both heatsrinkless and heatrinked cables and it makes the cables easier to train.

Okay, what about the two different 16AWG, do you know if there's any significantly difference between the two?

Where do you buy your wire at?

Nah they both seam to have the same stranded tinned copper wire. I get my wire in bulk from a factory here in Florida, extremely expensive because you have no choice but to buy in bulk, some time in the near future I will be selling the wire I buy in both white and black to customers but as of right now, I just do the custom cables people ask for.
