Beats are meant to look cool no doubt about that. But any experienced audiophile would agree that Seinnheiser or other brands could top Beats any day.

Is the thing above the EQs an amp?

Pretty sure that's an older Lexicon effects unit..

(not my rack)

I've found the sound quality of the HTC One was exceptionally bad and iPhones aren't really anything special... Maybe don't quite throw in the towel on your new acquisition yet.

Have you tried them with anything better?

Im sorry Linus, I highly respect your opinion but in this case you are utterly and completely wrong. The one has a dedicated amps for each stereo speaker plus one for the headphone jack. I've never heard a better sounding phone before and that includes the iPhone + Nokia 5800 ( which used  a 77514 I believe).

You did turn beats audio off right?

with beats audio off the default eq setting is really bad compared to something like poweramp which is a godsend for android devices

Yeah, but tell that to the masses, they've been brainwashed to think any cans with the letter 'b' printed on it is godly.  It's a classic case of form over function, as long as it looks cool, that's all that matters to them. I sometimes take a train to town, and my goodness, the number of Beats headset, from circumaural to in-ear, is saddening. Teens who know no better are looking so cool with their Beats cans......like I'd said, I'm using a simple Senn CX200 + Samsung S III combo, and my headset would sound so much better than all these Beats cans. I'm thinking of getting a Klipsch S4 since I saw a few sets going at a relatively low price, even w/o trying them, I would say with some confidence that it would easily sound better than a more expensive Beats cans.

I had a pair of Solo HDs and I'll admit I did like how they sounded with rap music. I'm a bit of a bass head so really liked the sound....

Until the head band snapped three weeks later.

I remember when a mate proudly slapped his new Beats over my ears telling me to blast them, they're the best of the best, real expensive. Needless to say I was underwhelmed

I used to think beats were awesome...

Until I tried a different pair of $200 headphones.
