Can't Install XP from USB

Scheer

I'm having issues booting from a USB drive trying to install Windows XP, when I boot from the USB all I get is constant beeping from my motherboard.

I can boot into the XP install from my other computers, and I can boot from USB for Windows 8 and Linux installs on the computer that isn't letting me do XP... so is there a BIOS setting or something that would only affect XP?

Set up the boot sequence in the BIOS,to boot up from the USB rather then the CD or HDD if you haven't done so already.

At this point, vista might even be a better choice...

Edit: I take that back. Vista will always suck.

Why are you trying to install XP anyway?

Its a CNC controller, newer OS's are buggy with the software from what I read, something about messing with the parallel port addresses which I use. Plus I have no reason to spend the money as XP suits me just fine for this.

Set up the boot sequence in the BIOS,to boot up from the USB rather then the CD or HDD if you haven't done so already.

It is setup properly as far as I am aware, I can boot from the USB on my drive with Win8 and another drive with Ubuntu just fine.

Security patches are going to end soon for XP.  Install 7 or 8.

This computer isn't connected to the network, so I'm not worried about it.

Which Service Pack of XP you have?

If I recall correctly, XP setup doesn't support USB at all, which might explain your problem.

MAYBE Service Pack 2 version of XP on disk might work... that is the version of XP I have not tried.

Its SP3, I can boot to the XP install on other computers, just not this one, so I know the USB works. But on the flip side I can boot into Win8 install on this computer, so the BIOS settings for booting to a USB are correct... I'm just thinking there is a weird setting I am missing somewhere maybe. It is a very old AMD motherboard.

Ah ok.

Well that's the thing... because it's a very old motherboard, there isn't anything to change.. I mean I could tell you to disable HPET (but I think it's an Intel thing), but that was something clearly after XP days. I could tell you to disable UEFI mode.. but again.. that's a late Windows 7, Windows 8 area thing...

The only thing I have in mind is to look at the SATA Controller (if the HDD is on SATA), and set the mode to: Compatibility/Legacy/IDE (same mode, but has different names based on the motherboard manufacture)

Beside that, I don't think there is anything else... mind you, it is old stuff for all of us.

How about trying to boot from disk?

I'm one of the few who actually likes Vista and 8/8.1

I'll try setting the SATA mode to something else tonight.

Disk is the next option, I just don't have any ODDs haha. I ordered one this morning though, so hopefully that will work.

Found a disk drive in an old computer I could steal from and that did the trick!

Thanks for the help.
