Folding with a Laptop

Hey guys,

I don't remember which post I was reading, but it said about folding not being bad for computers as long as fans etc are cleared of dust. I no longer have access to a desktop computer and only have my laptop. The laptop is a Sony Vaio Pro that tends to put the fans on full blast with even the most minute tasks. I was just wondering; will folding constantly, be bad for hardware as it doesn't have as much cooling as a desktop? Is there a recommended amount of time to fold for laptops (would it be bad to leave it folding 24/7)? I usually have the settings to either idle or light.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

I would not suggest running 24/7 but folding on light or idle should be good as long as you make sure to watch your temps.

I've tried to give the fans a clean with a can of compressed air but unfortunately I can't open the laptop up for a good clean :/

  • 3 months later...

I have an Asus g750 laptop, and I was curious if it would be good for folding on medium to high for like 8 hours a day? Also, can you set a team in the ps3 folding app?

just keep track of your temps, it might be fine it might not be fine, it depends on your laptop, if it hits 90-100 degrees and throttles itself, needless to day that's not very good :P, i would start on light and see how it goes from there, just fire it up and see if it is able to keep the heat in check.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Last time I folded cpu was in the 80s and gpu was in the 70-80ish range. Just wondering if that is good for the overall system since everything is so compact.

Also to note, folding with the Chrome app on a laptop is awesome, while folding on Light it can churn through WU's pretty quickly and actually doesn't get that hot. The only negative, no quick return bonus points or such.

So, if you unit and fans can handle it, desktop app the way to go, but if not, check out the Chrome folding app.

As for the PS3 Folding thing... no, that has been dead for some time...
